Ex employer reference

Hmm...something of a strange one. I've received a less than glowing reference from my last employer while going for a new role. I've been out of employment for a month or so, lined up a particularly good opportunity which has led to an offer and a draft contract.
3 references go through glowing, no problems. The fourth, my last employer, not so good. There were some tensions there, we basically didnt see eye to eye on strategy, but we left on what I thought were amicable terms. The new people wanted the last 2 companies I've worked for, and 2 customers too. Upshot so far, if I cant pull my references together the newbies will pull their offer.
So, how to tackle it? I've done 2 things so far
1) Found another slightly older referee from a past job, lined them up and asked the new employer if they'll be OK with it.
2) Asked the old employer what they've said and why they think that was a fair and accurate reference. They gave me a canned response which read slightly smarmy
Anything I should/shouldnt be doing as well?
What I'm more worried about is the next time this happens, and the time after that. 've tried reasonable with the past employer but for some reason they dont seem to want to play like that.

I've asked both sides what was said, and new employer have asked for that to stay confidential til if/when it's sorted out. Maybe stand a chance of getting some detail that they based their decisoin on if it goes tits.

t bingo response basicallyIs there no one at all in any sort of managerial/supervisory role in your old company that you got on with and would help out???.
Also - have you contacts within the industry who know you - and consider that your someone that could do a very good job for them. You never know what could come your way if you get your boot in the door
Hope you get a new job somewhere soon.
And sadly it looks like you may have to write off this particular new job - if the old employer is being a proper as about things - then this is going to probably be impossible to sort out.
