Les Paul alternative

I have a LP standard, Jeff Beck strat and a PRS studio.

I'm looking for a guitar that sounds like the LP, but plays and is put together like the PRS. Is there such a guitar?
I'm going to sell the PRS as it just doesn't sound as good as the LP by a long way. Can't be more than 2000, ideally less than 1200 quid. New or second doesn't matter.

The LTD EC400 can be picked up for around £300 or less new. Awesome sounds and amazing build quality.

love the look of them - but arn't they loaded with EMG pups? I'm not into active pickups

Well its all around lead playing not rhythm I'll talking about.I find that moving around the neck especially above the 15th fret is much better. I also find the neck more conjusive to faster playing. Its less of a fight than the LP. I also find I can get a lower action setup on the PRS than the LP in general though that might just be my particular LP (setup).

I'm sure the action could be improved on your LP, it isn't normally an issue with those guitars unless the action has been set high to overcome a problem with the neck or fretting.

As for the playability in the upper reaches, that's trickier. Have you been to a decent guitar shop and tried out a variety of different types? It's difficult to predict what will suit any particular player.

Sounds like a double-cut Les Paul or similar might be your thing. Gibson did one which had 24 frets and had a very slim neck, but there are other options: Hamer, Tokai Love Rock II, Yamaha SGs series.

Yes I would say the PRS is perfect fine in terms of access/neck. I've yet to fine a guitar that sounds as good as the LP for rock. I'm sure there's plenty out there but I can't seem to fine one.

How about one of the Chinese? built PRS and spend some money on some decent pickups, hardware and an excellent set-up, should still have plenty of change after selling the PRS.

Strat with beefy pups? The now discontinued Richie Sambora had fairly hefty humbuckers iirc

I don't think I've ever heard a strat sound just like a LP

You need a Nik Hubber Orca 59, its what I call a 'posh' les paul, quality is way better, feels & plays lovely....example of one below, they get snapped up pretty quick mind you....

Indeed, but you haven't been keeping up with the OP's extra info. The LP's neck-body joint is an issue (as it is for many guitarists), and the Huber just copies it.

have you looked at Reverend at all?...... although all the new ones are made in Korea, they are VERY well put together .....and if you can find one of the original US made models .....snap it up as fast as you can!!

Ooh interesting - never heard of them before. The Sensei HB looks nice, would need to get down to Oxford it seems to try at the only UK dealer.

I've never swapped pickups before - I feel I would be shooting in the dark somewhat
, and would think Mr smith would be doing a better job than me. Can they make a big difference? I'm also limited with the studio as it has mini pickups in the neck and mid positions.
