[Too Late]

So we are getting married next year and want to take advantage of tescos bulk buy offer

We are after 2x Whites, 2x Rosè and 2x Reds on each table. We are not huge wine buffs and would like some recommendations.....

Hopefully I can find the ones you recommend on the tesco website, buy them tomorrow. Drink them and order them before Sunday

Those prices are a bit on the high side compared to the same bottle elsewhere and the range isn't great.

I always order from tesco but take the offers rather than usual prices, I would say the offers on a lot of their wines are actually very good and majestic are going to be more expensive over them but then majestic have a much wider range if you need that sort of spread.

This is a very good white IMO you should definitely try it, on the red side, a fleurie or a Rioja always goes down well

I find the reviews on the tesco website pretty helpful and a good indicator.

On the rose side I'm yet to be blown away by anything...

I doubt it very much. This is the time of year to stock up as come January all the prices will have increased...next set of good offers will be in April for Easter.

eta from Tesco I'd go with Wolf Blass yellow label Cab sauv for the red, and the Chardonnay for the white.
Rose could be any white zinfandel

For white
A new zealand savigion blanc from marlbourgh region or an italian pinot grigio
For red
A chiliean cabernet savigion or a malbec
For Rose
A californian white zinfandel

If you are buying from tescos one thing I would try to avoid is two from the same company. i.e dont get the savigion blanc and cabernet savigion both from wolf blass as it will be blatently obvious to your guests you did the wine on the cheap.

Don't know where you are In uk but if you're not far from Dover etc then why not pop over to France for a booze run?
They're some good deals around- £30 ferry return 1.5hrs and eurostar £24 atm return. We're going this Sunday making a day of it- lovely cheap yet posh french lunch at 'le channel' and a double trolley attack on Carrefour then home! Going to do some Xmas shopping too- le cruset pans etc much cheaper!

I don't know why you'd give tesco your business over a local merchant?

Surely you can discuss your requirements with a local one and let them advise you according to budget and taste - rather than doing it in such an impersonal way?

You'll want some fizz for the toasts, in which case get down to Majestic for 'Bouvet' sparkling saumur at £8.99 a bottle if you buy two.

It looks the part (posh champagne-like bottle) and tastes far better than any cava or prosecco at that price point.

And you'll almost certainly get sale or return (along with glass hire at minimal cost) too... probably a healthy discount too.

One tip: when it's free, guests drink much more than you might expect!

Regarding tesco - can't go wrong with a New Zealand Sav blanc at the moment, if tesco have oyster bay on it is a good midranger - often on at £6-7 down from £9 so with their extra 25% off a case it could be a good shout.

For something a little different - if you can bear to face it (don't mock me now...) Tesco now do a range of 'simply' wine. Some is total dish water, but their claret and pinotage is drinkable in large volumes, and their sav blanc is also palatable, all for less than £5 a bottle. From the same range, their pink sparkling isn't shoddy at the price and my wife buys in bulk for dinner parties/hen-dos and the women LOVE the stuff on blind tastings. PS - we decant the 'simply' wines if we serve them to guests and no-one has ever muttered a bad word about them.

If you are sampling, try Wairu Cove sauvingon blanc, Linotti pino grigo and Rawnsley Estate cabernet merlot. Sorry no pink ideas, I'll have a look tomorrow.

Just to boing this thread, thanks for bringing Wairu Cove to my notice. On offer in my local Tesco £6.24 a bottle and appears to be extremely quaffable.
