Hi All,
I just joined your forum after finding some really great advice from passionate car owners here..Thanks!

Need some advice. I'm planning to buy a Caterham R500 from England and bring it back to Germany (where we live). Looking for any advice on whether this is possible and any issues with insuring it (or any other problems).

Thanks.
Aussie living in Cologne.

My experience in mainland Europe is the R500 is a bit of a no no as it's not homologated and the engine isn't Euro 5 compliant. I know in Spain it's a no go.

You might get away with an older car but this is why Caterham launched the 485R which has all the right homologation and emission papers. They do however really make you pay for that, on the road in Europe they are more money than a 620R!

Best of luck with everything and as stated talk to the German dealer as he did get a few early Duratecs on the road over there before Euro standards came into effect.

Thanks SpeedYellow. To clarify, I would plan to buy a used car (2008-2012 model probably). Do you know if this changes the situation? Otherwise it sounds like I need to do some more homework..cheers.

In Spain I know none of the Duratec R500's can be registered but I think in 2008 a couple were done in Germany and I know in Italy there were one or two that made it through registration before everything changed.

Otherwise you have to keep it on UK plates and have trips back to England, depends on your residency etc. pm if you'd like more info.

in germany the emission classiication is done by the registraion date and not the engine age.

the emission classification is also related to certain other things, like exhaust noise , OBD, tank fumes, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and so on.

so if the car has no COC paperwork its not a 100% no-no, but the car needs to pass a single type approval test where it needs to prove all the above mentioned things....costs a lot of money and not worth the effort.

2008 to 2012 is euro 4 and euro 5

as i know caterham delivered the r500 outside uk with differnt engines (with less power), and those got a homologation.

Rent4Ring in Nurburg have an R300 on the rental fleet, I delivered it out to them from Caterham, don't know if they had any issues registering it, could be worth an email.

There's a guy in Plein near Wittlich that has a boat load of Westy's, DAX's. He has a DAX with a EU approved S2k engine. He still has to go through the single type testing even though the engine came from an EU S2k. He told me that the test will cost 5-6 thousand Euro. OUCH!

My Caterham is a 1983 model year. So it's not an issue with EU4-5. But the insurance was going to be a pita through any German company. In fact most won't touch a car over 25 yrs old. Those that would insure wanted almost 160 Euro per month full cover, Unless I went with young timer insurance that limits the yearly usage. As I'm an American that is retired military. I qualified for USAA insurance, Which is an American company that will provide insurance in Europe. Full cover is $400 per year.

good luck
