I've just got off the phone to the Customer Services for a certain website where you can Trade Autos. I put our old Jeep on there several weeks ago, which I am trying to get rid of. The auto gearbox keeps going into limp mode (1st and 2nd only - max ~35mph), and I haven't got time at the moment to get it sorted.

In the original advert I stated that the gearbox went into 'rubbish mode', and everyone rang up asking what that was, I would explain and they would say no thanks.

So I changed the advert to say 'gearbox in limp mode'. The advert went through to 'processing', before going live. 10 days later it's still 'processing' and locked for any further editing, so I rang to find out why. It turns out 'limp' is a trigger word that automatically locks the ad! But they didn't bother to tell me.

1. Are there any other words I could use to describe the gearbox other than limp?

2. Has anyone had any other words flagged?

How very bizarre. I think it's a reasonably commonly understood turn of phrase to refer to a car, engine or gearbox to enter a state of semi failure, referred to as "limp mode" or "limp home mode". The clear implication that you can drive steadily on it a short distance, but you'll want to get it mended soon as really. So I can see a reason to allow the word. I'm struggling to think of a reason to disallow the work, it doesn't immediately strike me as having any racist/offensive/other connotations. All I can think is that maybe this website doesn't like people selling semi broken cars? That would be a really weird thing to restrict via advert text though, as writing "limp mode" shows you're being honest (as opposed to advertising it as 'fine'). Really weird, so I'd be interested to understand what's gone on here and why.

Yes, but it's done 86000 miles. Not what I'd call worn out for an '03 Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD.

Why not just tell the truth and say the gearbox is fked and needs replacing?

Seeing as we're on PH then 'Borked' mode will do.

Yes, nothing could possibly be worn out after 86000 miles rolleyes.
If you didn't know limp was a trigger word, why didn't you put it in to begin with?
Nobody ever says "rubbish mode" they always say "limp mode".

I see your point, I wrote the original ad when I was in a foul mood and was going to say st mode, but I thought that would get flagged.... Not sure why I said rubbish instead of limp to be honest, but then the ad would still have got flagged...

I'm just surprised limp is a trigger word when it's a common term. If it really was buggered then I'd put borked, and get people ringing asking what it means.

The fault clears intermittently and then it drives fine (for a Jeep!), I was just trying to be honest.

soo.. because you're really busy for several weeks, rather than write a proper ad and sell your car with minimum hassle, you wrote a rubbish ad because you were grumpy? aaand it's caused you more hassle? clap

I'm as confused as you are at the blocking thing (or maybe people thought you were being shifty and reported it or any change has to be approved or something)

When the electrickery stuff switches down to a minimum level I've always heard it described as 'get home' mode (or 'get you home' mode). Lever heard of 'limp' mode before.

would it get through the filter if you didn't put a space between 'limp & home'?
