I am looking to treat myself for my 40th birthday in a few weeks and thought that a day or three hiring a sportscar would be just the ticket. A Jag F-Type was my first choice but there seems to be none for hire in this neck of the woods (i.e. Scotland). A 911 would do nicely as an alternative, as I've never driven one and am keen to do so.

Now, clearly, when searching for hire cars in Scotland the internet delivers many a link to a promising website, from the mainstream ones like Hertz and Avis to performance specialists like "europeluxurycarhire" and "fantasygarage" dot com etc. However when actually enquiring, it turns out that the cars - Astons, Lambos, Jags and Porsches - are invariably nowhere near Scotland and they want an extra £500 (or more!) to deliver!

So I am stuck in the unusual situation of wanting to blow a load of cash (say up to £500 for one day) on a simple car hire but can find no-one willing and able to take my money!

Can anyone help?? As said, I've tried every likely-looking link that comes up when searching so what I'm really looking for is someone with personal / actual knowledge of a car hire business in Scotland that will hire me a 911 or something similarly special for a day in December.

All help appreciated....

The classic car club had a branch in Edinburgh - that has since been bought out by its members... I see from their website they also do single hires?

Might be worth a shout?

So it won't be a brand new car you rent but still some nice ones on their list.

Links - this is the one i found when googling classic car club edingburgh:
http://www.fantasyfleetclub.co.uk/introccc.html

On it:
Although the cars are normally only available to investors in Fantasy Fleet Ltd, they are available for one-off hires via Fantasy Garage - www.fantasygarage.co.uk

Caveat: i only know of the classic car club in edinburgh-> as I used to be a member of the london branch and I was planning a weekend in scotland once so I spoke to someone there and they seemed decent enough. In the end i actually took a car from my branch and drove up. So I cannot say anything about the operation especially now that its morphed so worth doing your own research there?

Rakoosh has got it spot on. Fantasy Fleet is what use to be Classic Car Club Scotland but it has been moving to newer cars over time. Fantasy Garage is the rental side. The cars are based mostly in Edinburgh.

You would be able to rent a 911 Turbo from them. I've driven it and it's a good car. There's also a 360 Spider, a 550 Maranello and a DB9, among others.

Colin and Myke at Fantasy Garage are good guys. I hope you get yhe drive of your dreams when you get in touch smile

Not knowing your dates or where you are in Scotland I did a sample search on www.avisprestige.com of their sports cars/convertibles to hire from Glasgow airport for 3 days over the weekend of 13th - 16th December. They claim to have a Jag F type S available for £699 for the 3 days. I've used them before and not had any problems with quoting me vehicles that aren't available.

But they tend to have minimum hire periods of 5 days, and a mileage limit of 100 miles/day.

The minimum the website will quote for is 2 days and I hadn't noticed the mileage allowance, probably because I hadn't hired anything affected by it - it pretty much only applies on the vehicles the OP is interested in. The £1 per mile excess mileage charge would get quite painful pretty soon.

Update on this topic: first of all, thanks to all those who replied.

Minutes after posting this, Colin from 'fantasyfleet' contacted me and we've sorted out a hire of their 911. Result! He seems like a top chap - very flexible (unlike all your Hertz's and Avis's) and also a good price (again very much unlike Hertz & co!) So I'm now looking forward to my first ever drive in a 911.

Can't wait. Happy Birthday me I say! bowtie

Excellent stuff! Let us know how well it goes as its a great idea !

The train journey up to Edinburgh is lovely. Much as I enjoy driving -> 4-5 hours on the motorway is not my idea of fun, so train plus havinh a nice car whilst up in scotland sounds teh way to do it.

Sitting at my desk now - envious of the lovely (and relatively traffic free) roads. Just hope its a nice clear day.
