Evening all, probably a very simple question/answer, but having never done a balance transfer between credit cards, I'm not sure if this is possible.

Basically my misses has got £x amount outstanding on her credit card (don't want to quote actual figures but lets call it £125), and I would like to transfer it onto mine. However I do not know the exact amount. I know its roughly between £y-£z ( say £100-£150).

Can I just apply for a transfer and click the whole amount (she won't tell me the balance as she isn't wanting me to pay it off).. I'm presuming I need to know the exact amount outstanding

Or, Can I just transfer a fixed amount from her card to mine (an estimate of say £140) or will this not work if I transfer too much? Or will her card just go into credit?

Thanks for any advice

From experience all you do is phone up your provider and say I want to transfer a balance from another credit card. They will ask for the long number (on her card) and how much you want to transfer and within a few days the amount will move from one card to another.

I very much doubt you'll be able to say transfer it all as your card provider wouldn't have details of her account.

You could estimate the transfer amount and if it creates a credit balance on her account she would have to spend that amount, I don't think she would be able to ask for a repayment.

As a caveat I have only moved a balance from one of my cards to another, not sure if they'd be any different rules in place for taking a balance from someone else's card.

If you actually want to pay off her balance, rather than just move her balance to your card with the amount still outstanding, make a payment to her card

You can ring the issuer with the card number and security details and pay by debit card or, with the details on the back of a statement, send a cheque / make a BACS
