Need a very cheap car as a stopgap for a couple of months.
I am a massive car snob though, so I don't like the idea of driving a KA for instance.

Is a very cheap Jaguar XJ6 a terrible idea? It only needs to last a couple of months...

I start Army Officer training in a few weeks so obviously an old English boat would tie in nicely, along with that tweed jacket I saw...

A cheap old XJ6 is a brilliant idea until it breaks down.

Find a good one and it's shedtastic.

Find a baddun' and you'll want to burn the fker and deny ever owning it in the first place.

What about an old e38 7 series 740i or an equivalent e class?

I have no mechanical background, but I did run an e34 5 series last year, whilst living in Canada. It broke down about 10 times, and I managed to fix the problems myself at the time. However the list of things I can fix is limited by simple tools, hammers and duct tape. Anything more complicated and I have no idea.

I was thinking about buying one for well under shed money, literally running it for 4 months or so then scrapping it. I imagine the car will be used less than twenty times for this period, just on middle distance cruises to go home, or to go to London.

The other idea would be an X type, same principal regarding purchasing cost though.

I plan on buying a much nicer car in a few months time, when I've accumulated some savings.

A friend and I bought an R plate XJ8 Sport for £900 in July for a European road trip. It has 150k on the clock.

We covered nearly a couple of thousand miles in the car UK (my friend took it up north on a few trips) then we did Spain, Portugal back to Spain and then to Ibiza.

Averaged about just over 30mpg and it was running with outside temperatures of 40C.

Headlining was sagging but otherwise in quite good condition. People were amazed (in a good way!) it was only £900.

Lovely car to drive, especially on those sweeping bends on the empty Portugueses motorways.

I say do it! Buy one!

It makes perfect sense. So much so that you should buy my Series 3 for maximum cool points.

Would probably be better off with a 5 series if I'm doing the BMW route, I am tempted by a 7er, but a 28i seems like a more reasonable propostion.

I'm 21 so anything too fast comes up a fair bit too expensive for me. A 520i or an XJ6 is still an extra 200 pounds on my insurance..

I'm coming from a 318i which no longer works, by the way.

So you'll be just fine.

Sounds like you are qualified to run a Caterham or TVR on the side too!

so chaps-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1996-JAGUAR-XJ6-RED-X300...

That's the sort of thing I'm looking at. Tatty exterior, cossetting interior, has an MOT so even if every type of oil is leaking, it should see me for a couple of months.

Thoughts?

I'd hold out for a better one and spend a bit more money.

Edinburgh laugh

It's a lovely car but I can't afford the trip up and back, in all honesty. I've not been working for a few months (Not on the dole, I hasten to add) and had Christmas budgeted perfectly, getting a new car has thrown a spanner in the works.

Hence why I'm looking at a tatty one for 400 quid. I've spoken to the insurance, I've spoken to the guy, looks like I might be going down there tomorrow!

I had a 3.6 XJ40, that cost £400, that was a great 9 months.

And sold it on ebay, with no tax or test, for £57 more than I paid.
