Want a 4x4 to primarily tow my race car over the country, its got to be respectable as a daily, not to worried about labour costs of garages as I am a mechanic so can do work myself. Insurance is the only issue only being 20 but even that seems to be coming down to a respectable level now.

What is out there? Been thinking Merc ML and BMW X3 that sort of size.

And before anyone says anything about my age and towing I have done the licence to tow up to 7.5T so it is legal.

cheers

I have recently bought another ML, I had one back in 2003 and liked it, but went back to M3s etc. but wanted something comfy without spending fortunes and I am not keen on saloons, so that ruled out the big comfy German cars, so bought the ML.

Really do like it, the fact it was soft means it has aged pretty well, unlike a 10 year old X5 which all felt very tired and needed probably £2k worth of suspension work doing.

I bought mine with 90k miles on it and installed an Alpine double din nav unit with dab, ipod and Android mirrorlink to freshen up the interior a bit, and it owed me around £4500, just under£4k on the car and nav and then the rest spent on doing things like new thermostats, service and new Michelin tyres all round etc.

Far comfier and much preferred over the 2010 E350 I had before it.

Bit of old man beige on the interior as well......

I'll second the Touareg TDi. I've taken mine from 90k to 145k miles in the last 3 years and it's been great. Averages about 35 overall with most of my miles travelling up and down the motorway.

I'd say Touareg too or maybe a Landcruiser if you want to look like a member of your local travelling community smile

I wouldn't wanna tow a car for a considerable period of time with a lot of those vehicles personally.

You can get a very nice X3 for 6k. I've just sold mine after 18 months trouble free motoring. A lot of toys with them if you can get a sports spec.

The Merc M is a disaster though. Stay away.

Touregs are great but they will be high miles at 6k.

I bought my X3 for 5500 on eBay. 3ltr Sport in black with sat nav, leather, etc. Sold for 4500 at 75k miles yesterday :-(

Combined weight of what you want to tow is going to shoot most softroaders out of the equation, I would probably look at a Discovery3 Tdv6 if it was my money and appearance was important.

XC90? Tows effortlessly, and it's a good daily driver. Extremely comfortable too.

Is it fk!

The ones from 98-2001 had a build issues, but the ones from 2002 onwards don't.

Hundreds of owners on the Merc forums who have never had an issue.

Good call, I would have a Disco 3 if I could get one for the right money.

I've been thinking of a pathfinder of all of them the space is immense. They seem to be as big as anything else with the seats up as they are with the seats down.
2010 teckna.

Are they actually any good?

Thanks for all the suggestionssmile

Are disco 3's really getting around 6k?

I'm going to look at a xc90 and ml tomorrow, in looks terms I'm swayed towards the xc90 but I'll see what they drive like. I'm sure the merc will drive well.

Avoid the 2008 MY D3 if that's what you're looking at. Some very expensive engine rebuilds occuring with that genre for some reason. D3 is an awesome bit of kit aside from that.
