I have a VVC engine. I was thinking of getting an Emerald ECU or similar, some throttle bodies.

Can I bolt these on or do I ideally need to blank off the VVC aspect?

I know you can buy a VVC blanking kit, but I'm assuming that isn't the whole story. Loosing the VVC will change the charastics of the engine. Would a new can be needed to balance out and improve the loss of the VVC?

You can use the emerald and throttle bodies with your vvc. You would need the blanking kit to use 2 conventional cams eg piper 285 cams. I would suggest a chat with Dave Andrews as either conversion is diy but Dave has done 100s. Have a read of his website and decide if you think it is beyond your skill.

So the blanking kit goes hand in hand with a set of new cams. Not a worry, just wanted to make sure I got all the right bits.

From my reading, throttle bodies and the VVC tech doesn't gain much, so I plan to go the whole hog.

Get your wallet ready then. If you are not building on a 160 with trophy pistons, you will need pistons, cams, springs, caps, verniers, blanking kit, jenveys, emerald. That should be about £3000 with some other not insignificant bits like gaskets and bolts etc. I'm just putting mine together. Was a supersport to which I added jenveys, emerald, verniers and bs airbox. Now sporting trophy pistons in new liners, vvc head with blanking kit, 285h cams, and converted from dizzy to wasted spark.

Yep, it's a slippery slope...

What started off as a 2002 1800 SS 140bhp with 1600 miles (in June 2008!) went through DVA K16 (160bhp) then K05 (set up at Emerald for 201.7bhp). Just picked up today with AP uprated clutch, Apollo tank and other bits...still only 13.5k miles though...it's always being worked on!

I've already uprated pistons from the k06a (?) Upgrade due to knowing that there would be more in future.

I am now on to the K06 upgrade which caps the VVC, adds an Emerald and throttle bodies.

I've the throttle bodies. Looking for an Emerald (anyone?) and I need to research what cams to buy plus I need to buy a VVC blanking kit.

It's all happening due to a winter rebuilt ready for shipping to the other side of the world next year. It's all a matter of 'while it's out' kinda thing.

I've ot the lightweight flywheel, now i'm concentrating on other aspects like modding the engine.

Ultimately your cam choice will be limited by your valve springs and caps. If you have the stock VVC springs then the hottest you can go without coil binding and/or valve bounce would be the 1320 or 964 profiles.

BP285H would be the normal choice but will require Piper springs and caps, with any of the cams mentioned you might also need to relieve the tops of the follower bores as the nose of the cam lobes can foul when lift is > 9.5mm.

Verniers will be needed too.

A good sound reliable ~200BHP is my rough goal. R400 area. Nice amount of torquey torque torque. Any more than I currently have will be sound.

Once I ship it abroad, I won't be even a driveable distance from DVA, so no visit to rebuild my overly stressed engine. So i'm hoping to stay away from R500 power levels. No sure what the K Series knowledge is in the foreign lands.

I've some Tritan throttle bodies. I'm after an Emerald, a VVC blanking kit and some verniers.
So if I blank the VVC, I need a BP285 cam with it's accessories.

I'll get hunting, Dave, are you a good shopping outlet (as it were), happily to put the money in your pockets over an unknown internet shop.

Other outlets are available but I have bought parts from DVA and he will put all you need in the box without the hassle of realising that xy or z is needed.

I don't want to advertise as that is not my purpose in being here, however I can supply pretty much anything you need and II am a Piper dealer and an Emerald dealer (amongst others).

Or if you want a proper build then there's alwalys the chance that if you can find him, you could hire the kingk team.

Sorry I'll go now (don't bite)

I'm running a VVC with an Emerald, RB DTH TB with a head breathed on by DVA.

It's a great setup around 180bhp with an issue with the engine breathing hot air from under the bonnet (Caterham 21).
Once the breathing is sorted I'll have it mapped again.

Do the pistons look different in anyway to tell you which you have. I have seen my pistons but could not make them out saying 160 on them although I did not look hard and it is a 160 engine but Dave mentioned they cobbled them together in the last few months before they went dump.
I remember how mine looked if there are differances.

I have the K06 kit (Jenvey DTH throttle bodies). The work was done by Dave and it was then mapped by Dave Walker at Emerald - it's 185bhp/c.150lb/ft, and utterly superb.

The valve cutouts are smaller on 160 pistons. Mine also have the part number etched into the crown.

As much as I want this upgrade, the throttle bodies, always been a must. The prices once added up seem to have added and added to a figure much more than I expected.

So thanks for the helpful replies guys, but I think I'm having to bow out this time around and just rebuild the 7 as is :-(.

What gear are you looking at, and how bothered are you by brand names? I appreciate it's a Cat and as such future purchases may expect to see Jenvey or what have you on the TBs, but it can be done for less if you really want it done. The V6 going in my classic has ITBs and the set up so far has cost me £200, including adaptors plates. I expect the final cost to be not more than £250 once I sort a linkage.

Have you put a "Wanted" ad up on Blatchat - sure there's some second hand bodies + emerald knocking around on there?

No longer a member unfortunately.

I have recently bought some Titan throttle bodies which I'm now pondering about selling on. I'd hoped to have gotten an Emerald ECU for ~£500 on eBay. Then I wasn't sure on how much the rest of the gubbins was but thought it would be quite cheap based on savings I'd have made buying the two main items second hand. But after a chat with DVA, it's still a long way to go on modifying the engine and with that more money.

So I think I'm calling it a day, although, I'd still as ever tempted!
