Hope you can help me avoid a wasted journey to the Post Office this morning!

I just bought a shed to run around in and need to tax it so I can use it tomorrow (1st of Dec)

I have insured it (on Thursday), but don't have the docs, they emailed confirmation (no policy number), but didn't send anything else.
I have the V5 filled in, but it obviously isn't in my name yet as far as the DVLA are concerned.
I have a valid MOT cert

Now given that all three are linked now I should be able to go and hand in the V5 and tax it, but I'm not sure.
Sound possible? Fast reply needed!

TIA for any help. smile

Do it online and save arguing at the post office. They'll want proof of insurance whereas it'll do an up to date check online.

You should only need a valid MOT cert and valid insurance to get the tax disc. That's all I've ever needed.

Disc will go the previous owner as their name is still on the V5.

Not in his name yet so won't permit him to do it.

Yes, but do the PO have that facility? I am insured, but no cert in hand.
Looks like I'm going to have to find out - the hard way!

as others have stated , you cannot get VED online until the V5 is in your name .

I had to do this a couple of months ago.

I didn't need the MOT cert but I did need the insurance one.

Explain exactly how he can do that? The car's not in his name thus he hasn't had a reminder with the reference number that has to be quoted to do it online.

You've said it twice now, nobody believes you, so educate us please.

Plus they won't be sending me a disc I can use tomorrow either, PO can issue one immediately.

Short answer is no anyhow as the PO don't have access to Insurance database which is a bit daft really - I could print off any old made up Ins cert and go tax the car if I was bent....

To be honest, even if the PO has access to the MID it may not help as not all insurance companies are that quick to upadte it.

You need the V5 new keepers supplement, MOT and insurance certificate. They will accept emailed and printed ones. Contact you insurance company and ask them to send a PDF of your insurance cert. Failing that even a faxed copy will do.

Yeah that's true, I've been pulled for being uninsured before even though I was (for 6 months prior).
The whole systems a bit st really isn't it? When I imported a car I'd bought in Holland it proved how organised other countries are, as soon as I got over here the DVLA messed it up.

Never mind, I'll crack on with getting some of the minor niggles sorted ready for a drive next week. smile
