Well, if you want something other than a diesel Eurobox that is.

I want petrol – I've nothing against diesels but I don't do enough miles, so the potential bork factor outweighs any possible fuel saving.

I want a slushbox auto – I drive manuals at work, and don't want to shift cogs in my own time, and I don't want the potential borkage of multitronic or DSG.

I want a car less than 5 years old.

Sadly, such vehicles don't appear to exist.

So do I compromise and buy a diesel (and accept the goings wrong) or take a chance on a CVT or DSG box?

Tbh, neither fills me with much enthusiasm.

Ps. Ok currently risking it with a DSG box. Hopefully it doesn't break because I love it.

Does the car have to be fast, or is it just a commuter?

Maybe you would be better off with these. Less to go wrong.

They are indeed few and far between given the prevalence of diesels in the last few years, but they are around.

Take a look at the guy trying to shift his 525i 2008 in the BMW section. That seems cheap...

388,078 cars for sale on AT.

Applies "Up to five years old" filter: 240,343

Applies "Petrol" filter: 113,651

Applies "Automatic" filter: 20,630 (with a further 215 categorised as "semi-auto").

Can't filter specifically between TC autos and double clutchers/CVTs, but I have a feeling the vast majority of those 20,000+ vehicles for sale today in the UK will feature a regular automatic gearbox.

If you don't want a "Eurobox", then 1,876 are convertibles, 2,355 are coupes and 736 are 4x4s. So that's a smidge under 5,000 possibilities.

So they do exist. 60 seconds and an internet connection reveals this to be the case.

I never understand these posts about not being able to find a car. The UK has got probably one of the best markets for second cars.

My left field suggestion would be the current gen accord. The petrol is ok if a bit gutless, but I really like the 'box. It's a proper slush box which doesn't surprise and does what you tell it. Also very comfy place to sit and a very decent stereo on the top spec.

Is a CVT transmission really a big risk these days, particularly at less than 5 years old?

Many Jap manufacturers are using them quite extensively, as they give better results in CO2 emission tests. Times have moved on since the days of "rubber band" transmissions in old Volvo 340s.
