Sticking this on on behalf of my son. Hes looking to change his car come January, when he turns 20.

Currently has a 2006 Honda Civic 1.8 EX, black, black leather, panoramic roof, lowered, black drift type alloys.

Previous car was a 2005 Golf 1.9 TDI Sport, silver, 18 inch r32 type alloys, lowered.

Prior to that Fiesta 1.4 Zetec, MG ZR 1.4, Peugeot 206 2.0 HDI Sport.

Hes looking something 2.0 turbodiesel, or possibly another petrol car if its not too sore on fuel, and something not mental on insurance - so that probably rules out proper "hot hatches".

He reckons he'll get around £4000 for his own car, he'll have another £3000 cash to put to it, and could probably borrow another couple of thousand off his grandparents to get the "right" car.

Although i've stopped motor trading, i still have trade contacts and trade accounts with a couple of the big dealer chains so that £9K might buy him something that would retail at perhaps £11,000 to £12,000.

His primary choice at the moment would be a 120D M Sport 3 door, or possibly a coupe. He tells me he can get insurance ok for this. I guess that would remain to be seen at the time.

Other cars i've come up with would be a Audi A3 2.0 TDI S Line. Mk6 Golf (hes not ecstatic about one of those as i've one and he previously had a mk5) but it might be an option. Other choice would be a Seat Leon 2.0TDI.

Probably all of those cars would be at some point lowered and bigger rims fitted.

So, basically, something up to £10K, not too hard to insure and would look well lowered and with rims. Must be focus sized, and ideally "a bit different" from regular choices for a 20 year old.

Any thoughts?

As a 20 year old, these are all very common 20 year old cars.

I'd rather a 3 series over a 1 series, infact I have an E91, the interior is much nicer, it's not that much bigger either. I've got an early one so I know the engines have improved but I struggle to see over 45mpg in my 320D, although it's not that slow and boring. The 1 series does look nice though, would have to be an M Sport, ditch the run flats, don't go for wheels any bigger than the 18s it comes with.

I wouldn't be looking at the Leon if I could afford an A3/S3. But I found the A3 I drove to be very boring. Popular within the modifying scene so will be able to pick up stuff cheaply, and is well supported by the VAG scene.

For the money he could get a really nice E92, which is the coupe 3 series.

I like BMWs a lot though, they're less boring to drive I find, and RWD is nice, different to what I've had so far. Think they look great.

FWIW, my insurance is £780 fully comp, so easily affordable.

Okay 11k but this is lovely - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...

My first thought was a Volkswagen/Audi group car (such as the ones you've listed), with the 2.0TDI engine, a 140bhp model would be less on insurance and is easily tuned with a remap if he wants a bit more power.. If he isn't too keen on Golfs, the Scirocco might be a good call? Decent 2009 models fetch around 11k.

May also want to look at the Mini Cooper SD, possibly coming in at top end of your budget nowadays, pretty "sporty" and has the engine out of the BMW 118D if I'm right in thinking.

But if it doesn't have to be a hatch, my money would probably be on the BMW E92 stated above^! There's just something about a nice classy rear drive coupe, they're available on budget and pretty economical with the right engine too.

I would get the 120d 3 door myself and then he can lower it and fit some CSL/BBS CH wheels if he wants to modify it and maybe get the dark front grill etc...

For upgrades he could do LCI (Facelift) rear lights and headlights, as TECHNICALLY, the one I linked is a Pre-LCI, but unlike the 5 doors, the bodywork is the same for them both in the 3 doors, with the only exterior differences being the lights as far as I know.

3 doors may be more on insurance I never checked. Thats a 180bhp model.
