Has anybody had a battery problem with a 987 Gen 2 Boxster S?

I'm thinking of buying a conditioner to plug into the lighter socket.

How long does it take the battery to drain if the car is not used for a while?

Grateful for any advice.

I've had a couple of issues in the last week which I have attributed to battery problems on my 987.1.

Both windows decided to drop to the position that they normally go to when you release the hood drop lever, this happened when the car was parked on drive & I wouldn't have known about it unless I'd gone out to get something out of the garage. Car hasn't been used much over the last 4 / 5 weeks & when it has the lights / heater / rear heated screen etc has been on.

Booked car into OPC who couldn't find anything wrong. Battery had been replaced at start of this year under warranty. I connected it to a CTEK & it took 9 hours to bring to maintenance mode.

It's not practical to keep it permanently connected to the CTEK for me so whilst it's not getting used much I'm going to put it on charge weekly. Need to restore trust in it really as it's a bit disconcerting to come back to the car with the windows down!

Car batteries like to be fully charged all the time. They don't like to be run-down and recharged, run down and recharged. The battery's job is only to provide a few seconds of high current to start the car and its technology is very different from e.g. phone batteries.

The best battery conditioner is the alternator. But if you can't use the car once or twice a week, use a permanently connected battery tender to keep it topped up.

Another option is to buy a "deep cycle" battery made by the likes of Optima and available from Tayna. Optima Yellow Top costs about £200.

Details of the Optima range here, and what the colours mean. Yellow is the one for lightly used cars.
