Can hdmi be run over a single cat 5e cable at 1080p?, I see you can get the adapters but most require 2 cat cables so do the ones requiring 1 cable cut the mustard on quality or not?.

Yes, there are a couple of different types.

The best two to look for are HDBaseT and HDBaseT Lite.

Both work really well and I use them in my customer installs all the time.

There is a lot of proprietary stuff at less money, but it is no where near reliable enough for installs that I sell to clients.

DIY is different and people are far more prepared to but up with resets etc.

Brands to look at

CYP
wyrestorm
octava
HD Anywhere

There is no 'next best' and if you want to buy cheep just expect to buy twice, or three times etc. HDMI might be a pretty clever bit of technology but it's a hideous product, badly thought out and was thrust upon us without much care.

VEX is spot on and the only sensible choice is HDBaseT (Lite or full fat). This was developed by Valens Semiconductor along with some of the biggest names in technology and is the only standard for long distance HDMI distribution, anything else is basically a Heath Robinson, brand specific, unsupported product. Before HDBaseT we tried loads of products and found nothing that offered any form of reliability. I have full faith in HDBaseT.

Buy anything else at your peril.

I have been considering running 2 runs of Cat6 to my projector rather than a long HDMI cable, the idea being I want to future proof for 4K, I can then upgrade baluns as and when the correct ones are available at a resonable price. Does it matter which Cat6 cable I purchase or will just some long runs from ebay suffice? Looking at 10/15 metre runs and running in ceiling/behind coving so really want to run once and leave in place.
Thanks

In your case I would just buy some ready made 15m Cat6 cables and run them in, I'd also install an HDMI, 15m is okay if you buy a decent cable, use the Cat6 if you need to in the future.

HDBaseT sounds really interesting; the possibility of sending everything including power to a TV with one cable is amazing. Seems a few years away though and can’t wait for the various CAT6 cable quality debates!

Main problem with powering TVs is the maximum 100w and 50v?DC voltage. Most current TVs are 230v AC. Will need TVs with a dedicated HDBT input to work really well.

Aquavision TV now have the option to be powered via the HDBT port built into them.

Makes getting round the power issues of bathroom tv's so much easier.

I have CYP baluns that use a cat6/cat5e pair. I would classify them as "pretty good" - when they work they are great, but you do need to power cycle them from time to time, which is a bit of a pain frankly (especially when I get a call from my wife when I'm at work telling me the TV won't work and the kids are getting restless smile )
