DSLR's - Help!! (Nikon D3200 or Canon 650D)

Morning gents

Please god just tell me which you would buy and why. I have a D3000 Nikon, it's ok, but just broke...

I have 2 lenses for it but they're cheap ones and not fussed about just selling them on...

Head says Nikon, 24mp, same UI to current camera etc, however...

I was given the Nikon and for some reason (that I really can't justify) I want a Cannon..(650D is 18mp)

Both do full HD video, Canon has a lovely screen and cheaper lenses....

The wife wants to buy one for me for Xmas up to circa £400 for a lens pack type kit...

I also looked at the Sony a37, which ephoto rave about but lots of others far less so...

I've been mulling it over all frigging evening, which one would you go for?

We can despatch pixel count because it's not, in the real world, significant.

More important is ergonomics. Performance is effectively the same so choose the one that feels the best to use. If you're worried about the price of lenses I'd avoid the Sony. If you simply 'want' a Canon then get a Canon

Personally I'd get a Nikon. But that's only because I've been through all the pain over the last 16 years of getting to know how they work. So asking other people... how's that going to help exactly? You're due about a 70/30 split telling you that Canon is best. (By my reckoning)

Thanks guys, I've used a 600d canon and it certainly felt very nice to me (ergonomically)

Ive got a Canon but you should ask your friends and buy the one that most of your friends have. That way you can borrow lenses and have more fun together working things out.

Neither the Canon or the Nikon are bad cameras at all.

So: fabulous glass choice, new and secondhand on the Nikkor front. Get a Nikon body with an internal focus motor, and that can happily meter with manual lenses. Learn RAW, Learn photography. Then you can be as crap as me!

That's my current gripe, my Nikon d3000 doesn't have a motor body and the lenses I have bought were crazy money! (Resorted to tamron stuff to keep price down)

The motorised bodied Nikons seem to be lots of money compared with the canon equivalent?

Not overly impressed with my tamron 300mm lens, it looses clarity at maximum zoom for sure, hence I'm not bothered so much about sticking with a Fitment that is just for Nikons...

As per this thread it seems 50/50!!

another vote for Canon from me. I have a 60D and the movable screen is actually quite handy for setting up shots using live view on a tripod.

AF-S lenses aren't all expensive, though as with any lens good ones cost more (as you have found out with the Tamron). Good or cheap, take yer choice.

Entry level bodies don't have the motor, allegedly to keep costs down. That's why motors only appear in the midrange and higher bodies - which cost more because they do other stuff too. However, AF-S lenses work faster and quieter than screw-drives so it's simply a nicer way to do things.

My macro lens is screw drive and it's quite odd to hear it going 'zzzzz' 'zzzzz'!

Camera focus motors are so 1986....

The are more ef lenses than f mount and they all meter and auto focus on every canon body :-D

But honestly just get the one that works for you.

For the price of the 650D you can get a D5200.
Is there a reason you havent considered the "middle" of the Nikon Consumer range?

No not at all, is that worth a look?

Problem is then you get to the canon 700d that seems have unanimous rave reviews!?

Its around the price of the 650D.
Even less (£425) if you go grey import.

Nikon d3xxx is similar level to 1000d/100d
D5xxx = 650/700d
D7xxx = 60/70D
D300 = 7d

Step up and you get a few more features, fps, better autofocus, ergonomics and such. Most of it doesnt really make a huge difference to the end product.

I have a D3200 and while it takes great pictures, ive found its truly awful for HD Video, far to much noise

Also the tilting screen on the D5100 and D5200 is a lot more useful than you think. Especially if you are using a tripod that isnt at eye level.
