05 987 engine stinks!!

I have just noticed that the engine on my 05 987 S has become really smelly!

After even a short drive, there is a very strong fishy odour coming out of the drivers side vent.

Oil is full, and there is no strange noises or lack of power from the engine.

There is no smell at all from the vent when the engine is cold, so that seems to have ruled out the possibility of something crawling up there and dying!

Anyone else had similar?

That's what I thought at first, but the car lives in a garage and I rarely park it up outside for more than 5 minutes at a time!

Some coolants can give off a fishy smell - hows the level, any leaks?

Sounds like a coolant leak to me.

Define "fishy"

Best I can equate to that is clutch, or brakes (same difference).

Coolant perhaps, too.

Depends what your local chippie dishes up I suppose!

It is like that awful smell when you go into a kitchen where mackerel has been cooked the previous evening - stale and horrible!

Thanks for the replies, I haven't noticed any leaks, but will check coolant.

Coolant smell is particular but I don't think you could call it unpleasant.

Clutch smell on the other hand, is.

I had a rat crawl up into my engine to die once. I had noticed a bit of a whiff a few times when it was hot - I guess cooking rats doesn't smell too good. It didn't bother me enough to investigate, so made a lovely surprise present for the guys to remove when it went in for a service!

From your comments it sounds like a burnt clutch.

Either you are riding it or its on the way out.

That's why dwarf recipes always add ketchup
