Spent the last day or so unbolting, removing and lifting. Much easier than I expected, with very little swearing involved until I saw the extent of the rust. Not good considering it's only three years since a full body off restoration by professionals!

The good news is that's it's only surface rust and everything is rock solid but it's very disappointing that the powder coat has failed so badly and so quickly! So that leads me to my question; what's the best way of removing the powder coat to get it to bare metal? I intend to use POR15 paint with Metal Ready prep but something that I can just brush on to strip the powder coat would make the prep work significantly easier.

I should image sand blasting the chassis would be the best way to go.

Maybe sandblasting wouldn't then!

Is there some form of motorised sanding belt you can use? Perhaps hook it around the outriggers? Just thinking out loud...

How do you go about it?

I know we can't name & shame, but if that's only 3 years old whoever did it should be shot.

Yep. Just a basic lift to access the outriggers. The rest of the chassis is fine and I'm hoping a good covering of waxoyl will give it another 4 or 5 years before the next seeing to.

Anyone know if the powder coat will take the paint if it's well keyed? It can't be any worse than the pathetic powder coat.

Also, should this be expected after a professional body off after three and a half years years and 12,000 miles? I'm somewhat disappointed I have to say.

That's sort of what I'm thinking as well. Thoroughly disappointed and the rust was evident after 12 months. I should have taken it back then but unfortunately life got in the way and it wasn't top of my priorities. No naming and shaming but the company that did it is a self proclaimed chassis specialist in the north.

Powerboat (noun, powaaaaaaaaah-bow-t) 1. TVR Cerbera aqua-planing. 2. Any other TVR-aqua planing. 3. Boat with stupidly large engine attached

laugh

You can buy hand-held sand blasters which would connect to a compressor and do a good job of stripping that lot down. Rig up some ventilation, get a mask and lots of sheeting you can reclaim the sand from though.....it makes a mess!
First thing is to check the rest of the chassis isn't as bad though, because then you might as well haul the whole thing off.

Looks like the replacement outriggers were coated as badly as the original ones to me.

How about some paint gun cleaner? That stuff will normally remove anything.

Bit of googling suggests that using paint strippers with methanol in them works and there are a few powder coat removing solvents for sale, don't know how good they are. I would just try some paint gun cleaner, it's cheap, easy to find and comes in big cans.

And you reckon remove ALL the powder coat rather than keying the surface of the good areas and just painting over?

If it were me.... I'd just clean, degrease, rough up the surface a bit, and paint with POR-15...smile

The trouble with keying the powder coat then painting is the fact if the powder coat will still come off and take the paint with it as it obviously hasnt stuck very well

If it was me, I would be tempted to go the whole hog, get the body completely off and then re-coat the chassis. I don't fancy the idea of using very strong chemicals in an enclosed environment, especially whilst in close proximity and whilst the chassis is very close to the paintwork on the body.

yikes . This is very worrying. If I go & buy a car that has had a body off resto in the last 3 years I'd expect perfection.......

yikes

No amount of scraping & POR15 is going to cure that chap. You're going to have to have the chassis blasted & coated properly again. yes
