When I was younger i always thought who'd be daft enough to buy a new car when you can get a bigger used car which is more bang for your buck.

I've now changed completely and only like brand new cars.

Eg id rather have a new diesel a3 than an old 745i for example.

Why?
Mpg better on newer cars
Less rattles
Worry free with warranty
Safer
Less likely to break down

BUT, the big thing is technology.

Fancy an old 996 turbo? No sat nav, cassette holders, no iPod connectivity, no hands free thing build in, no radar guided cruise, no reversing camera, no keyless entry or keyless go, no toys.

Nowadays even little Toyotas are jam packed with toys, cameras, park themselves etc.

The final thing is not just mpg but range. A new diesel can do 700 miles on a tank meaning you have to queue and fill up in the cold less.

Ok so a diesel is slower, doesn't sound as good but other than than I cant see why these bargain barge threads exist. You cant drive quickly due to cameras and losing your licence as that chap in the gtr who has just gone to prison has found out and most of the time youre sat in traffic.

However i still find myself looking at a jag XJ with wood and leather on a 54 plate for £4k thinking how cheap they are! But then I think 'what would I actually want it for?' Its big, it will be hard to park it will breakdown, need filling up and just be a hassle to own as a daily but also pointless as a fun weekend car.

Think ive hit middle age wanting a stress free lifestyle. Still have weekend cars but I never drive them and theyre just a hassle to tax, service and repair and 'deal with'.

Appreciate this is a little tongue in cheek but a worthy discussion to provide some banter smile

I'd be happy to take one of the weekend cars you never drive off your hands for you. What do you have you no longer want?

ALL cars, no matter what make, blow up the day after their first MOT.

That is scientific fact.

Another scientific fact, is diesel Audis are boring as fk.

NCP spaces are tiny when parking next to all the 4x4s and other people just sling the doors open into your car!

An old car may have more chance of breaking down, but even if it does, it'll likely cost less to repair than the huge depreciation that you'll be dealing with on your new car in the first year alone.

Plus I find most new cars incredibly bland.

Exact opposite here, older cars for less toys and purer driving experience clap

The age related downsides are just part of the (justifiable imo) price in owning an oldie.

They don't but even an mot is half a day out of your life every year!
Plus you gotta deal with mot people trying to get you to buy a new tyre!
Yes, they are boring but short of driving a countach to work in traffic what is exciting? Is being sat in a queue in traffic in a diablo better? After time the lack of good air con, manual box and stares and worries over parking it anywhere would get anyone down!

Perhaps but a leased car costs peanuts to run. It's not so much the money (but of course it helps) but its just if you break down on the M1 at 930pm on a wet and cold Tuesday its more of an irritation sat waiting an hour for the aa man to come and tow you home!

Perhaps, but as an every day car going to the gym or work or doing daily duties do you really want to be in a cater ham r500. Getting a pure driving experience?

Bland compared to what? A new m135i surely is no less bland than say an e30 m3? Prob as cheap to run too if not cheaper, plus faster.

  • Sat nav - still yet to need it.
  • Cassette holders - irrelevant, but a quaint detail.
  • iPod connectivity - not an issue for me.
  • Handsfree - the very last place I want to be called or make calls is when driving.
  • Radar cruise - prefer to either use my own judgement, regular cruise, or just not be behind anyone at a steady speed.
  • Reversing camera - I have eyes, the car has mirrors.
  • Keyless entry - Because plipping a remote is such an onerous task.
  • Keyless go - As above, regards turning a key in a barrel.
  • "Toys" - 400+ bhp, two turbos, six gears, four driven wheels. 4 secs to 60, 180+ mph. Quite sufficient playthings thanks.
You can keep your Aygo thanks. As much of the same applies to the older and even more obsolete (but much prettier) 993 Turbo 4, I'll take one of those thanks. Gladly.

scratchchin

Yep, still want the old piece of st with no "toys". What website am I on?

Enjoy your diesel VAG.

Really? Do you all think a10 year old 745i would be safer than a modern brand new a3 which brakes automatically, has presumably more airbags, pre crash sensors, more modern technology and is brand new so chances of things working inc shorter stopping distance? Also what if an old 7 is rusty etc or crash repaired etc?

Il happily accept im wrong on that point if the masses disagree.

Why do you say otherwise? Is it just that a 7 series is bigger with more metal?
