Recently got my car (2003 BMW 330Ci) back from the bodyshop where it had been treated to a front end re-spray. I have washed it a couple of times since and the job looked really good. However, after washing this pm I noticed a dark 'shadow' about 5'' wide on part of the bonnet. Now I've seen it, it seems so obvious. Any ideas what has caused this?

No - don't think my camera would pick up the quite subtle difference in paint colour and it was after 3 this pm when the light was starting to go. The paint finish appears to be very smooth and uniform overall.

Primer showing through too thin a basecoat?
Ultimately we're just guessing, without seeing it nobody will be able to give you any advice...

Was there any dents in the bonnet?
It could be that the paint has sunk over the filler(this is caused by the engine heat).
It could also be that the paint was sanded down to the metal in that area and again the paint has sunk over that.

A not so good colour blend???
Or ....
A not so good lacquer fade out (not that a bonnet should really be faded) - which may also be compounded by a 'cheaper' lacquer that's not quite clear????

As mentioned above there are numerous reasons that might cause this type of 'defect'.
Letting an 'expert' see it 'in the flesh' might be the only way to get a definitive answer.

All - thank you so much for your responses. I found it v. Difficult to get a decent pic in the Autumn gloom so in the end I took it to back to the bodyshop. They applied some polish (I assume with an orbital or DA polisher) and it seems to have done the trick.

I'm happy with the level of finish overall but I have to say I'm rarely satisfied first time with the standard of work produced by body shops - orange peel and overspray being the most common offenders. A topic for the forum some other time perhaps...

Car is finished in titanium silver by the way...
