I am planning on using a Duretec in my rwd build and had been thinking of using a type 9 gear box. However the MX5 6 speed gear box fits and I was tempted by that. Does any body have experience of the different gear boxes or have any recommendations?

Type 9 will need a custom bell housing (readily available from places like retroford/westfield/caterham as the bold pattern on the duratec is different to the previous 50 years of ford engines. You will also need a beefed up Type 9 from somewhere like BGH as the standard doesn't do much over 180hp and the duretec I guess may be knocking on that. Finally on the Type 9 the first gear is very short and has a wide gap to 2nd so if you are going down that route then a long first heavy duty type 9 is the one to have (or possibly the 2.8 Capri version if you can find one). For the Duratec this is not a cheap option, I'd budget about £1k for it.

There is also the T5 to consider (as in 2wd cosworth and TV use them) pretty bullet proof and designed for higher HP. Still needs a bellhousing but gear ratios and strength are pretty good.

Sorry, no info about the MX5 but there have been plenty used with supercharged and turbo'd MX5s running 200HP+ so looks pretty good on paper. Just need to sort out the bell hosing or adapter plate.

I understand that the MX5 box is much wider than the Type 9 and will often require chassis changes.

There was a write up on this a couple of years ago in Classic Ford mag IIRC

Think the 5 speed mx5 box is easier (slimmer and lighter)

Also seem to remember Retrosport being the guy doing most with this box? They have a lightweight escort estate for drag racing?

IIRC the Mk3 MX5 has a version of the duratec in it so the latest 6 speed gearbox may fit straight on but don't quote me on that.

Yes you are very correct, the box will bolt straight on, however it will be tilted over by about 10 degrees if you are using the box if the engine is to be upright. Mazda warrant the gearboxes to be tilted by this amount so it is ok to do that...just means you will need to put a bend in the gear lever.

As already commented on, you will probably need to use the 5 speed box, as the 6 speed wont go in the chassis of a conventional car.

which durance engine?

The V6 Duratec engines are also used in the S type Jag which were inline... not sure if they were all autos but worth looking into as will be a direct fit along with the clutch/flywheel etc and will take 300bhp!

Thanks for the feed back. I was thinking of using the I4 Duratec hopefully achieving around 200bhp. As others have mentions the cost of a bell housing, fly wheel, clutch and type 9 is around 1k, this would seam to be the same sort of cost as using the 6 speed NC box.

This interesting build thread shows the box in a car you can see the angle. I guess as the cost are similar it comes down to finding the box that has the better ratios.

Caterham 6 speed is the (very) obvious choice. Good ratio spread for a lightweight car, good for 300bhp. Used for around £1500

Do they come with a bellhousing that fits a duratec? Where do you find them used .

You'll get a used one by looking in PH Classifieds (parts) or in the for sale section of www.blatchat.com - you can contact people via PM on Blatchat without being a member.

All of Caterham's currenbt top end cars (R300/400/R500/R620) use the Duratec, and the Caterham 6 speed is the same form factor as a type 9, so any bellhousing that firs a type 0 will fit a Duratec.

Be aware the Cateham box coms with a long nosed input shaft (1.4 K-Series) and a short nose. The long nose ones are harder to find though you can get one from Road and Race Transmissions in Kent - Phil Stewart , Filston Farm, Filston Lane, Sevenoaks, Kent TN14 5JU 01959 525105
