Perhaps a daft question, so go easy on me. I've obscured the plates on my car in the classifieds on the basis that otherwise it's easy for undesirables to trace the address. A prospective buyer is asking for the reg and the VIN in advance of seeing the car, no doubt to run an HPI.

Presumably it would be acceptable for me to give him the VIN but not the reg? Or does it not matter, and there's no point being so cautious?

If you put the Vin in to an HPI, it returns the registration.

The main reason not to display your registration number is to prevent somebody cloning your car and committing offences under its identity.

To obtain your address from your registration number would require misuse of police resources or a sackable offence by a DVLA employee.

Of course you display it publicly every time you take it out for a drive...

Thanks, that's helpful. So I should have no particular qualms about giving both details.

Haha, yes I'm aware the reg no is not invisible whilst driving. smile I just figured the thieves and cloners would trawl online ads looking for specific models...

I take the view that anybody coming to view the car to buy it will see the reg number, the documentation and so on anyway.

If it gets stolen, it's insured for that. If it gets cloned, it'll be a pain in the arse, but I'd take my chances of the odds being very low.

A few years ago I Bought a car on ebay which had the plate showing in the pics.
Then I found out 6 months later that some Asylum seekers had been driving around a couple of hundred miles away in an identical car which was cloned from my plates in the pictures.

The only way I knew this was I was getting letters from supermarket petrol stations saying I owed money here and there for filling up and not paying..

I did some homework and got an address so informed the police in that area but as normal they didn't bother doing a thing.

Having the Reg. No. and V5C or MoT Ref. are needed for this:

I find it annoying when cars reg's aren't displayed in adverts as I can't get proper insurance quotes without them. I find that cars quotes tend to vary from reg to reg for some reason, mainly as I'm usually quite broad with the spec of a specific car when buying and i'm still classed as a young driver with insurance companies at 24.
