Close remote tailgate with key fob - C-Class

Does anyone know why the remote tailgate on a c-class can be opened with the key fob but not closed? First world problem I know Its irritating!

It closes with a button on the tailgate so surely the fob is capable of doing it too?

You can close it from the driver's seat with the button on the door, but I think the fact that it can't be closed remotely is a safety feature. You've no idea whether anything is in the way, and from seeing mine trying to mash a very thick hedge, it seems not to have any anti-trap feature.

If it's any consolation, my previous BMW didn't allow you to close it remotely either.

If the tailgate on the C Class senses an obstruction, it will simply open again, so no chance of anything being trapped. I've wondered the same as the OP and originally thought mine just wasn't working, but since learned this is how it's meant to be.
