Anything you can find with that budget.... you'll probably find you're into something that's nearly 20 years old and a bit scabby but might have a long-ish MoT.

That means eBay, car auctions, local paper, Gumtree, etc., and hoping for the best.

This is the sort of thing I mean:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-Mercedes-Benz-C250-...

It's 16 years old, but it has seven months' tax and MoT (so <£500 after the tax) and is a diesel and automatic.

A decent diesel will be much harder to find than petrol at that budget.

Agreed, and automatic makes it much harder again, even if it is necessary.

I'd say one of your requirements needs to give, should probably be diesel or expand your budget.

Part of the fun in shedding is putting your post code in ebay etc then seeing what comes up!

Isn't that at least £2,500 worth?

Checked - not quite that much although you could easily pay it, but certainly well north of £1,500.

Late 1990s/early 2000s Volvo? 440 or S40 perhaps. Unglamorous but tough and autos are reasonably common.
