Audi confirms Q1

Yup, another SUV/crossover thing, possibly small enough to fit in your Q7's boot

Is there room in the Audi range for another Q-branded crossover type thing? Go on then, just a small one...

Confirmed today, the all-new Audi Q1 will take all that we seemingly hold so dear about the Q7, Q5 and Q3 and offer them in a shrunken A1-based form. Glamour magazine in an SUV context, if we're to make sweeping assumptions about the audience being targeted here. After all, what could be wrong about a supermini-based crossover with jacked up ride height and faux-by-faux pretentions? (The answer, in case you'd forgotten, is Ford Fusion.)

Cynicism aside for a moment there is potential here. Think an Audi-branded premium Panda 4x4 type thing and you might have a recipe for a bit of fun. Certainly the sketch looks pretty cool, but then it probably did for the Q3 too and what a generic lump that turned out to be. And can you really translate Q7-type high street intimidation into a supermini sized car? You can be sure they'll give it a go. No wonder either - according to the press release announcing the car - due on sale in 2016 - 28 per cent of Audis sold this year will be Q-models and this is expected to increase to 35 per cent by 2020. With an expected end-of-year total run of 230,000, the Q5 is the real money spinner of the family but having an entry-level Q1 to snap up first-time car buyers while they're young and impressionable is probably a smart tactic.

erm...

Hot Wheels would have rejected that as 'too extreme' - in reality it will look like a frumpy Kuga...

I just recently realized Audi has 6 different cars available with four doors: A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8 (yes I know the A5 and A7 have a rear hatch so technically they have 5 doors but you know what I mean)

Another Q car? Doesn't surprise me...

Who me ?

Totally O/T, but has anyone noticed that Audi cars are named in reverse paper sizes. Citroen name theirs in envelope sizes .

Why the excitement, it's called choice, and Audi seem to be doing OK commercially so it can only be a good thing in my view.

You can get the A1 in 4 door as well now !

I'll go along with the theory that BMW or MERC do not have a car in this sector - closest challenger will be the the Mini Countryman (well I guess that is BMW then !) I think.

A Q3 came past me today as I was walking through a Sainsburys carpark, it really is quite small, I thought I bet that goes well with the 2.5l 5 pot engine in it.

Not sure a Q1 is needed though.

1.62 average on the PH O'Meter; was I the only person to give it a great big fat '0'?

I don't think the picture helped; ludicrous looks, even by fantasy car design standards....

I was thinking the same, don't worry the production model will sort that.

Would run out of oil too quickly if they made it.
