Anyone know if the DVLA are flexible on prices for private plates? Do they ever have a sale or anything like that?! There must be thousands of plates that will never get bought so you would think any sale is better than no sale. Anyone ever been cheeky and asked?

I'm not exactly answering your question, but bear in mind that number plates cost the DLVA nothing at all, they don't even exist until someone wants one (and then only virtually) so it's not like there is any issue with "unsold" ones.

Dvla do not negotiate. I emailed them via contact form on their website, asked if a plate I was interested in had ever been issued , it was a 1975 one. They said no, put it in their next auction for me.. They'll auction anything on request. Even things like RGX 752V that means nothing to anyone aside from the person who requested it. The reserve prices are pretty reasonable to, just hope you're the only one who wants it smile

You can see what price things have sold for in the past

Just viewed the list on your link, are those prices guide prices or starting prices?

Reserve prices. Plus auction fees. I have bought a few all at reserve as I was the only bidder. One I bought from dvla at 2900 including fees was advertised by a company on the net for 8000.. You'll see a lot of the numbers already for sale on the usual regtransfers etc, even though they have not even been released by dvla yet. That's just a scam. They'll basically register your interest, agree a sale price. If someone else outbids them on auction day they'll make up some excuse to you smile

They were actually really helpful when I was trying to find a number, you can suggest a few examples for them to look and see if they have ever been issued before. Easy way to do a preliminary check is to run it through mycarcheck and see if it comes back as registered to anything. If so, then you ain't going to get it from dvla

Also remember that auction fees can get quite pricey, on top of the hammer price there is 20% vat, 8% buyers premium plus 20% vat and £80 assignment fee. So, for example a winning bid of £1000 will actually cost you £1376!

So if they have a plate for sale on their site at £399, then its best of just purchasing it at that price?

I've bought two plates direct from DVLA, not from their auction but from advertised price on their site. Very, very easy to deal with, transfer fee etc included in advertised price. From first click to documents in my hand was about 5 working days.

Yes. You will not get it cheaper.
