Hello PH'ers

I have what might seem an odd question to ask, get views on and or advice. I have fallen in love with the idea of an 2009/2010 Granturismo S MC Shift as my weekend family transport (I work in town so only occasional use). Looks like it will cost circa £50k which I can stretch to but am I missing alternatives with 4 proper seats, is beautiful to look at (IMHO), reasonably reliable and has a monster sound track. I have pretty much had German sports cars in recent years (including 4 997s and a 987 Boxter S) and plan to keep a the current 997 Turbo cab alongside the Maser. Am I mad or should I do it? Could I achieve similar by spending £15K on a mint old shape RS4 and stick some Miltek pipes on the back?

I know you can buy a lot of older metal for a lot less cash so am I really going to regret dropping that sort of wedge or is the Granturismo experience worth it?

Let me know what you think!

Lovely car and I would consider it, however I am led to believe that the running costs are significantly higher than the Maser (I am not worried about fuel costs but servicing and repairs) and I don't think the DB9 has proper rear seats?

Hmm. A Gran Turismo is on my wish list. But I was a bit alarmed to see an ad for one the PH classifieds which stated that the last service had fixed everything - at a cost of £9k!

The DB9 has piddly rear seats though. Smaller than in a 911, according to my Godson.

Fair enough, in that case I'd definitely get the Maserati, they are stunning cars which sound awesome. As you say they have proper rear seats too, I think the db9 rear seats provide a similar amount of space as the 911.

If you can afford it and you dare to be different then go for it.
A really nice car, not that I have any real life experience! Do plenty of research into the general running costs, buy with your eyes wide open. Depreciation will be quite harsh on these I think.

Indeed, depreciation is one of the things holding me back. I know when I go back to the dealers in 2 years I can expect a further 40-50% hit on my £50k. I have been reading as much as I can on the forums from other owners about running costs and they seem reasonable for such a car (£750 per year ish). Hoping someone with real life experience might chime in here.

Check out Harry Metcalfe's vid on his GTS, also watch the vid on the AM Rapide on interior space, the Maserati won, even with 2 doors.

Harry mentioned how his 6ft son could sit with room in the back of the GT with Harry sat in front in his seating position. I wouldn't let the 2drs fool you seems to be a rather spacious car.

I'd say go for, I love them, I don't think Ive read a bad word against them, and your using it for what it was intended (not as a sports car solely).

Get it in black...

I wish everyone would stop going on about the granturismo its driving me nuts this must be the 4th thread and 3rd article saying how good they are ..............

I have been trying to find an mc shift black on cream car for ages but all this GOOD publicity is holding up residuals and making them fly off the shelves !!!!

We need to go back to the " why is my 997 only worth £10k and when will the engine blow up threads" at least until I have found a MC shift !!!!

Phib

On a serious note there great cars had a 4.2 at launch the another 997 and the Gt is the only car I want back !!!

Yes, I have watched this many times which has got me to this position. Just wondered if Harry was doing a sales job;)

Got mine 5 months ago, absolutely smitten.
As you're after a 2010,get one with the 2 year extended warranty ( or negotiate to have it) as it really is bumper to bumper even down to bits of trim etc. Servicing every two years or 12.5K miles, and from reports reliabilty is apparently leagues above the 3200/4200/Gransport era.Residuals have levelled,so an early 2008/58 4.7 MC shift still sits at circa 45K + which effectively is 50%ish of it's new value. Not bad for a 5 year old car.If your looking at a 2010 for say circa 52-55 grand, you'll lose no more than 10Kish in two years unless you are doing stella mileage. And it will always sound like it's 200K's worth of exotica!!
I assume you've popped on to www.sportsmaserati.co.uk?

Haha, I was really impressed when he set his seat in his driving position then climbed in the back without being crippled, if he is a secret Maserati salesmen he's doing a bloody good job wink Although I doubt I would need much sales pitch. Look, listen, drive, where do I sign...

I was pleased to see that it came off so well against the Rapide, for a 4dr it really didn't look such a great Idea against the sleeker Maserati.

Harry owned a 4.2 when it was first out I believe then he changed to a S, I wonder if he's got his mitts on the latest 4 seater MC Stradale yet, he might be upgrading again...

Do it, they are great cars and reliability issues are a thing of the past.

As said above, you can easily seat four average size adults and the noise is one of the best out there at the moment.

The only slight downsides for me were the size, it is a big car and A-road blasts can be tricky and driving around town in MC mode was a bit jerky but in sport mode it was fine.

I won't mind the size as the plan is not for it to be a flat out sports car, but to drive at 6/10ths and enjoy the ride and noise with the family. The turbo is there to fill the need for speed gap. smile

Have had my MC Shift for 4 years and love it. I can't think of any other car that has the same level of drama and character but is as practical as the GT, they really are in a class of their own. In terms of running costs, servicing is reasonable by Italian exotica standards although a new set of brake pads and discs will set you back about £3k, so if buying check their condition. A clutch is about the same if getting an MC shift, so again get a reading of the approximate clutch wear and factor in any forthcoming change into the price. That said clutches appear to be holding up well on these, leagues appart from the old 4200 cambiocorsa days. Standard 2 year service is about £1,200 if I recall correctly.

The above will all pale into insignificance when you fire one up for the first time, a truly epic soundtrack that will have you reaching for your cheque book in no time, you have been warned!

The cost of the brakes seems incredible for non ceramics! I buy the clutch costs due to complexity. I'm still going to go for it either way wink

There's cheaper options nowadays for brakes I believe, as they are similar to the 550 ones.

It might be just me, but there are not many times that someone tells you, don't worry, parts on your car have become cheaper because they also fit on a Ferrari! Very amusing smile
