I've had this car for 11 years now, buying it from a dealership. It is a 2000 vauxhall vectra 1.8 GLS. Many memories are with it, holidays, work and other things. A great, reliable car which only needed a service and it's fine! Absolutely perfect, with a nice engine. But, it started getting old, the brakes got squeaky and the car would stall when coming to a stop(idling). So, now, we were left with a choice. Repair the EGR/ Idle air control valve or scrap/sell it. We then got an XC90 and decided to leave it on our driveway. So, tomorrow morning it will be gone by 9am. cry really sad to see it go frown. Wanted to try and start it aswell, but the car has a flat tyre. Chances are the petrol won't work as it's six months old now frown.

If it is such an important part of your your life - re-purpose it

The Top Gear V8 engine coffee tables look nice.
What does a Vectra engine side table look like. (probably crap)

Office chair using the driver's seat?

Garden/ Shed lights using headlamps etc.

Radio in the garden shed.
etc

No I'm sorry that was bad, you obviously like this car, and I have come up with a useful suggestion. Vinyl Wrap with this livery and start modding for track days smile

What mileage is it on?

That's easily repairable to a mechanic or diyer, sad really as the scrap value you will get paid on collection would be more than you can sell with the issues.

Just think in ten years time you will be doing this with the Volvo?

To be honest, the vauxhall is carrying off from the volvo in terms of mileage. The vauxhall ended at 130,000 miles, the volvo was bought with 130,000 miles. Ad I heard these go on a long way, and that 200,000 miles is nothing for a car like this. Chances are that we'll sell the volvo later on as the volvo was las minute due to a baby in the family.

Really, so the 9 months warning wasn't enough? wink

Sometimes you fall out of love with the car and just have to let it go. I've only scrapped 1 car in my life once I had fixed various things, bought a new engine for etc. Scrap guys are horrible heartless monsters to deal with because they just see the metal but sometimes it's the only way. To be honest it sounds like it's time to move it on frown

Yeah I guess you're right... Although, this will be a different story with my 528i E39. I have fallen in love with that car, I couldn't bear to sell that whatsoever. That has its own problems (speedo decided to stop at 150,000 a few years ago). But, it's time to move on for the vauxhall and send it to motorway heaven smile. Vauxhall, I bid you farewell. Anyone want to bid it farewell? biggrin

Funny isn't it, my wife has a 2000 Golf which has plenty of life left in it, whereas my mate had a similar aged, top spec (SRi) Vecra with less miles than our Golf and he sold if for peanuts about 2 years ago, and it's probably been scrapped now. also, his car got far more TLC than our Golf ever does, but his was always getting silly problems, failed sensors etc, whereas ours just goes on and on. And they probably cost a similar amount when new!!!

Mine seemed to go on and on with no problems. TLC? Nah mate. Of course, til a few months ago...
I guess it's due to german cars depreciating less and the fact that it's german compared to a British car.
My cousin managed to sell his car for £4500. It was a 2000 golf. Crazy money that, but it's because his boss really wanted it (law firm)

I had a 1999 1.8 vectra in 2002 for 6 months that was previously my father's. The wallowy cornering, cutting out of the engine when turning right and the leaking boot ( a £2 washer fix) outweighed the huge amount of sentimental value it held. Truly awful.
I can't say I look back with affection on it.

give it a viking burial - open the oil sump so it slowly drains the oil, and brick on the throttle. i give it 5-10 minutes!

If I can move it! Chances are the parts will go to vauxhall vectra 'enthusiasts'. Maybe, just maybe, someone might restore it and it will be back on the road. I'll be keeping an eye out for a T71 MHD banger!

In my (outdated) profile, you will see a Honda Accord. It's been in the family for 13 years with my Dad owning it for 9 years, and I've had it 4 years. It was my first car at 17, and I have now done close to 90k miles with her in just 4 years (190k on clocks). I honestly cannot put into words just how much it means to me! I have owned A LOT of other cars, most of which would be faster/better looking/newer than my trusty Accord. Thing is, none made me look out the window and smile like the Accord does. Frankly, there are just too many memories in the car to which it has now become part of the family and people have become to know me as "That fella with the faded Honda?" and even the missus knows her place when compared wink...I sometimes look back on the days of being an innocent 8-year old sat in the back on our way to Holland/Germany/Sweden and pretty much the whole of Europe over the years and just replay all those thoughts and scenarios in my head and think fondly of all my memorys then and now that have happened with that car.

Sure, at times it gets tough and you have to question your sanity. It's worth nothing (literally!), the paint is atrocious, some people think it's a wreck and it drinks huge amounts of fuel for the driving I do. However it drives like new, has never let me down and is such an amazing all rounder that I really wonder why not just keep it going? All it's ever wanted is servicing and consumables...It's still on the original clutch! Christ, I love the car so much that I spent over 1k in registrations fees when moving abroad, and have now got a respray and cosmetic overhaul booked for spring which is setting me back almost 4 times that amount! Too most people it sounds like madness and I completely understand, but why spend money to buy a mundane yet newer econobox when I can just bring this still healthy steed back to its former glory and have a great time doing so?

Anyway, rant over. I just wanted to share that as I know how you feel OP, maybe more so than most people. Maybe my attitude would change if my car ever done something drastic like throw a rod (Where's that wood? hehe) and I would also have to consider scrapping my memorys, but I just know that no matter how bad it gets I would always fix it.

Sometime you just have to throw logic out the window and do what makes you happy...In my case, it's keeping my old companion by my side.

Confused. Car stops working and instead off being fixed is scrapped.

Can't like it that much....
