They had something like that in one of the Fast and Furious films didn't they? Except it was more of a car-taser type thing.

Probably a good alternative to stingers in all honesty.

Until an innocent passer by gets hit and their ECU is fried.

Thinking about it, this could make for some pretty cool getaway cars, as the criminals will be looking to avoid any car with electronic fuel injection. I'm thinking 1970's 3.0 Capri's might come back in to fashion.

except of course if they are going more than 20mph they can just roll past the gizmo and restart the car

unless they have a pace maker in which case they will be dead

Hmm, not sure I want the police stopping cars by frazzling their ECU - a stolen car at high speed in which the thief suddenly finds himself without powersteering or brake servo sounds like the recipe for a pretty bad outcome!

I might be wrong but don't most modern cars have power assisted brakes and steering? so when this is activated the car is just going to go straight into whatever is in front of it if its doing any speed...

PAS and brake assistance are driven by what? Electrofairies?

Admittedly EPAS is probably vulnerable.

But would the charge fry the condenser?

If not, then I’m glad I’m still running my original contact breaker set!

(not that I’m planning on using my car for any nefarious activities...)

Last I checked, you can still steer and stop a car with no engine running. It's hard, but possible.

Steering/stopping a car with no tyres is a lot harder.

Unless I'm being very thick, the engine will still be running while in gear, and all the auxiliaries still powered. Who knows what auto or semi-auto cars will do, but on something simple, it seems like an eminently safe way to stop a car.

Make sure your getaway vehicle is a Vauxhall Viva.

Good point, I've turned my engine completely off on long downhill runs and it makes no difference at all, it's just like being on over run. Brakes and steering still work until you come to a halt.

It's even better than I thought actually!

Instead of it tanking past with burst tyres?

But back to the OP - I'd like to have seen that EMP gadget work if the car/bike had gone past at, say, 50mph. Bet it wouldn't work. Still, early days yet.

Great until they work out how to fit EM protection.

I can see lots of budding footballers with heart conditions appearing as they say the electric pulse gave them irregular heart beat and pains in their chest.

Personally I would use the device and just shoot them to save the hassle of a court case with them showing no remorse.

Good point. Hadn't thought of that. Would still like to know what all would happen though. Especially with electric steering.

Fair point, but as I understand the tyres deflate in a controlled manner. In truth, I don't like either option, but a few tonnes of car with a crim at the wheel will always be a challenge to stop.

Bit pointless really for most of the world (although i could see the application in Iraq or similar)
In the US 'OnStar' already gives the police a "remote" stop service for GM cars!

A car full of kiddies died in my state by doing this but turning the key all the way off and engaging the steering lock.
