Overturned Lorries
Discussion
Currently our emergency services are dealing with overturned lorries on the M1, M181, M74, M66, M62, M60 and M6.
Some motorways have a couple on them by the looks of things.
Can they not stay off the road while the wind is up or is that totally unrealistic and the risk worth the reward?

They probably could stay off the road.
However given we're approaching Christmas I expect the drivers under more pressure than usual to get stuff done and also out to earn every penny they can so they won't stop unless theres something physically stopping them. Also at times like this Bosses are notoriously not interested in stopping work as (occasionally understandably) they are not only not making money but actually losing it whilst the lorries are stood.
If a driver said he wasn't going to drive he'd probably get the same snotty response that I get when I refuse to drive through snow to get to work and the driver could risk losing the work altogether to someone who will do it.
All in all its completely understandable why they're on the roads but they probably shouldn't be in these conditions.

I'm not sure the modern 'just in time' delivery tactics of supermarkets and warehouses would be compatible with a 3 day notice period based on the weather? We'd have to change how things work quite considerably.
I'd agree with that. The same way that I find it bonkers that for example companies in London order toilet roll, hand towels and paper cups from a company in Bristol every day and expect it to in London at 9am. If it's that essential I am certain there are copious amounts of suppliers in the capital that can assist.

That would be considerably more expensive though! And it's not their problem if a delivery driver can't teleport through a traffic jam!The same way that I find it bonkers that for example companies in London order toilet roll, hand towels and paper cups from a company in Bristol every day and expect it to in London at 9am. I agree though, it is a bit daft, for those who say "as long as there's insurances in place then maybe it is", I'd have to disagree. You can't really put a price on someones life and all it takes is a lorry to topple on top of some poor soul in a 15 year old corsa and they probably wouldn't stand a chance.
But then again, it's only the minority that are encountering problems, probably for every 10,000 trucks on the motorway there's 1 that overturns and that's the one the news focuses on.
