Thruxton driving experience, anyone done it?
Discussion
Thinking of doing this with some mates for my 40th Next year. Anyone have thoughts on it?

Also anyone know if the formula Renault is restricted?
Don't really want to do it if I can get round quicker in my megane estate.

I did the single seat experience, ten years ago, was my first track experience.
Was well organised, the single seater was limited to 4500rpm but felt bloody quick, you did bounce off the limiter on the straights though. It was a good 1/2 day but I got the Phil price rally school day for my 40th and that was much much better !

Did it a few years ago for my 18th birthday. If you've never done a trackday before it's a good intro - I got about 14 laps in an Exige, then 5 in Formula Renault. The single seater was rev restricted a lot, but good to experience the agility, and on a wet track probably better not to go too fast.
Now I've got some track days under my belt, definitely wouldn't bother with it. Caterham drift day is better!

I'm not a seasoned pro, but I have done several track days. Done 7 type drift day, and owned one. Where is and what does the rally day involve?
Phil Price is in Wales: http://www.philprice.co.uk/location/I've done the single seat experience at Silverstone twice. No 4.5k rev limit, I think they rev to around 6.5-7k. I think the cars are around 500kg with a 1.6 Ford engine (160bhp?) and 4 speed gearbox. Each time I did 20 minutes behind a pace car (felt very slow) then 20 mins free to go as quick as you like as long as you keep it on the black stuff and don't spin. The only slightly frustrating thing was other drivers not letting you past on the straights when they are clearly slower through the corners and brake much earlier, but you'll get some of that whenever you have to share the track with other drivers!
My mrs bought me one of these 4 years ago and I was gutted, she spent a decent amount of money and I knew what a disappointment it was going to be based on previous experiences.
Usual briefing then some driving in a Mazda MPS, good enough to get yer lines and braking zones. Then in the Cayman with the instructor telling me to give it some....nice, and a really nice car to throw around!
Next was the top of the bill, LP640, owner told me to put it in third and leave it there!!!!!! "100 mph through that corner",,,',mmmmm felt like 40! Admittedly it was his car and no doubt cost him a fair chunk but it was a it of a deflation.
Anyway, onto the formula Renaults. After doing brands some 20 yrs ago I was expecting 4000 rpm and 70 on the straights and it was in my mind that I was gonna wring the neck out of it and if I wasn't "invited" back then so be it!
No restrictions and no annoying Marshall's on every corner flagging me down, just out there respecting the circuit and the car being left to my own devices"...............thoroughly enjoyed that.
To be honest though a well run track day is a lot better value for money.........
Whatever you do, enjoy

Very good day. Or if you're all really flush Palmer day at Bedford. IMHO these are 2 of the best days in the country. Both blow Thruxton into the weeds.
I did the MX-5 experience, with a view to upgrading to Formula Renault on the day.
Started off with an out, a flying and an in lap with the instructor driving. Then 5 laps with him as a passenger. I'd done some track driving before, so he was pushing and pushing me, soon we were overtaking everything out there, bar the FRs.
After that I went to sign up for a Formula Renault, but there were none available, so they let me take the MX-5 out again, this time on my own. Without his extra weight I was keeping up with the FRs (being driven very delicately it looked like) and overtaking some of the slower ones. The Lambos and Ferraris were obviously limited, and the people in Caymans seemed to just want to be able to say they'd driven a Porsche.
At the end I got a blast as a passenger in an RX-8 driven by Tom Onslow-Cole, which was fairly terrifying.
It was pretty good value overall, I'm glad I did the MX-5 in the end as the chaps in the FRs did say they felt like they ran out of revs too soon.

The Phil price day is good value for driving time, you are hardly ever sitting down for that long, great lunch, great scenery.
You get a few lessons in mk2 escorts round a dirt figure of eight, then you go it alone in them, also a drive in a dual control Subaru impreza with Phil reading pace notes, a passenger ride in a group n rally impreza, first time I've been properly airborne in a car !
Then you have a little timed competition with all the other drivers in the escorts round the dirt track, it's really good for spectators too, as they can get passenger rides in the rally car too (for a little extra).

www.palmersport.com gives all the details on the cars - i've been going for years - and many from PH have been along with me - without exception, they loved it....
I'm having it!What's your favourite to drive?

What's your favourite to drive?
For me, it's the single seater, as it's the same chassis I learned to track drive in - but the Atom and Caterham are also up there - There are a pile of us going early in Aug (including some from PH) - PM me for details.....What's your favourite to drive?
I did the Lamborghini Gallardo Plus experience there for my 18th a couple of years ago. To summarise, it was fantastic
I won't go into so much into detail about the Cayman and Gallardo as you're asking about the Renault, but it is a very fast track and the instructors I had really encouraged me to use all the power and go fast (topped out at 130mph in the Lambo - I wonder how the Aventador would be!)
The Renault is limited, I can't remember if it's 100mph or 120mph, but it feels bloody fast and you (well I) did go flat our through some of the fast bends and was touching the limiter.
Cannot recommend it enough.
