Other Country domain names

Can I as a UK based company register other countries domain names ?

I am currently sorting out translations for our website, and was thinking of getting for example de.com and com.fr type domains and having them redirected to the relevant language sections of our UK based site.

Can anyone in this side of the industry offer some advice.

Alot of the foreign TLD/SLDs are only available to companies reg;d in that country itself, to protect them from abuse / ensure a market.

We are able to offer some foreign domains, but the list is rather limited.

.biz
.ca
.cc
.cn
.de
.info
.name
.tv
.us

the more exotic ones will need to be bought from specialist companies, and wont be in the same price bracket as the more generic
