Looking for a new car for my mum,

Has a mint 38,000 mile A3 2.0T Sportback Sport from new. Been a great car, only reason for sale is my Dad gets a bad back driving it, claiming seats are hard. Doctor supposedly said it's not uncommon to hear this. He's 61 btw.

So being the stubborn man he is the Audi must go. And he is concerned the same will be the case with other VAG products.

Due to mileage petrol is fine, doesn't need to be a rocket ship, 40mpg is fine. £20k budget, up to a year old, ideally similar size to A3 as bigger car in family, but do use it to go away on weekends etc, so no superminis.

I can't what is out there. 1-Series is all I can really think, they would like something decent quality.

Thoughts?

A Volvo S60 should fit the bill if seat comfort is important.

They don't have to be the best, just more compliant that the ones in the Audi. Incidentally he never had a problem in my Passat with comfy leather, and has always been fine in his BMWs and jaguar.

Why not just get a pair (or even 1) Recaro seat for it? It is stupid getting rid of the entire car when you can just swap the seat.

I had to get rid of a 1 series because of back pain.

Volvo put a lot of time and effort into making their cars very comfortable indeed, look no further.

My neighbour loved his Citroen Picasso for that very reason- it was one of the only cars he's owned that didn't bother his bad back.

So based on that, I'd say buy a Citroen seat from Ebay and fit it in a 1-Series.

Tried out various seats in a car supermarket recently. Volvo S60 was the most comfortable. The VAG cars I tried were pretty hard, except for a leather Octavia.

Lexus seats are generally incredibly comfortable.

Don't underestimate the pain put on a back by firm sports suspension.

I would rule out BMW 1-series IMO. Seats not great at all and certainly no better than an A3.

The best seats I have had were in an Audi A8, closely followed by an Alpina B10. The answer to good seats is look at top end executive transport, they just have better seats than anything mainstream and are often bargains used.

Don't think that this is a general problem with VAG cars. Always had problems with A3s myself, but no problem in the A2 (and that's with the basic entry level seats). Golf is soso, Passat good, A5 soso. Volvo and SAAB very good. All IMO, and that's the crux. I think he'll just have to try them in the exact spec on the car he's interested in.

TVR Cerbera, I had a discectomy L4/5 in 99 and need another one out L5/S1 Bought a Cerb, drove it like I'd stolen it and never once had any back ache or shooting pains down my sciatic nerve.

Everything else Mercs, Beemers and even the DB7 all give me some trouble, only other car that is grief free is daughters MGTF, but then again I drive it 'enthusiastically'

Volvo V40.

It's in the same catagory as the A3/1 series but Volvo make the most comfy chairs.

Something heavy, with standard suspension and a large tyre sidewall would be the place to start. Volvo and SAAB generally accepted to be very good.

Infact just think stereotypical 'old man cars': Jag, volvo estate etc tongue out

I have always found this with VAG group cars.

My current car is a 5 series M Sport and thus has the best seats I have ever had in any car... I am now doing circa 50,000 miles a year and my back is fine, even after the 3 hour battle home I have had to endure tonight!
