Sign pledge plea to slow and save life
by Jenna Weekes
MOTORISTS in Wimborne are being asked to sign a document pledging to drive better and slower amidst fears someone will be killed by a speeding driver.
The idea has been dreamt up by Michael Evans, vice-president and trustee of Vision Wimborne, and aims to reduce danger and encourage considerate driving.
Pamela Shrubbs, chairman of Vision Wimborne, said: "Many people are diving too fast in Wimborne and it's only a matter of time before someone is knocked down. People are much more likely to be killed if they're struck by a car travelling at 40mph than 20. "The pledge is aimed at making people think and if they do keep to the speed limits then the boy racers that come up behind you too fast won't be able to get past and will have to slow down. We would love the boy racers to sign the pledge too but it is voluntary."
The pledge reads: "I pledge to try my best to drive within speed limits at all times and show consideration to all other road users and to drive economically and to refresh my knowledge of the Highway Code and encourage others to do the same."
The launch of the Better Driving and Speed Pledge comes as chiefs at Dorset County Council consider whether to create a 20 mph speed limit in Wimborne Town Centre.
Tony Mackle, section manager of traffic and safety management at the county council, said if it's given the green light the speed restriction could be in place by early 2005. But he backed other measures such as the better driving pledge to slow motorists down.
He added: "We try to slow people down by introducing rules and regulations but an initiative that encourages people to stick to under 30mph in a built-up area has got to be a good thing and we would support it."
The form is available from the Town Hall, Library, Allendale House and the Community Learning and Resource Centre in King Street

You have to laugh. This old bird is clearly living in Noddy world. So only 'boy racers' speed, do they? Not the good salt-of-the-earth citizens of Wimborne then. Oh no.
As for driving slowly to hold up the 'boy racers', wont they just tailgate them dangerously, then overtake in a dangerous and high speed fashion.

...
The pledge reads: "I pledge to try my best to drive within speed limits at all times and show consideration to all other road users...
So drive with consideration to all other road users, apart from so called "boy racers" who it's all right to show no consideration to!
Also I'm surprised that someone who is obviously politically correct would use an obviously sexist term like "boy racer". Should that not be "young person racer"?

Try my best. Oh that's nice. So when they run you over, you know they were trying.
'economically'? At 15 mph in second cog?
How about "I promise to drive like a sensible human being and devote 100% of my brain to the job in hand"
Oh hang on, I just assume that's expected of me every time I get behind the wheel.

Don't know why, but this reminds me of the Cub promise I used to recite at the start of every meeting, I think I was about seven at the time!!
Where is the pledge to stupid pedestrians that promises they will learn to understand that they should never have right of way when there is a vehicle oncoming. They will never just blindly plunge into the road and blame the road users when they get hit.
The simple motto should be;
ROADS ARE FOR VEHICLES & PAVEMENTS ARE FOR PEOPLE
Vehicle goes onto pavement = Criminal offence
Sedestrian goes into road = Criminal offence
STOP the persecution of the motorist.

Speed is either in your blood or it isn't. I used to cycle to work in Frankfurt. One of my mates bought me a digital speedo with mempory that could calculate average speeds and show the maximum speed for each journey. Even though I cycled the five minutes to work in a suit, I tried to set a new vmax and a new highest average speed every day. It never occurred to me at the time that if I came off at 50+ km/h Ino downhill bits) my suit would probably not look too smart.
