Hi All

I've started going to the gym and its going pretty good. I'm eating healthier too.

With going from no exercise ever to 2 hours of exercise 5 days a week, naturally I am going to be more hungry...

The problem is, with the cost of gym membership I can't really afford to buy more food to satisfy my increased appetite.

I've always happily fed myself on £25 a week - since I joined the gym this has now shot up to £40 which I really can't afford.

Do any gym nuts have any tips on how to keep up regular exercise without having to by enough food to feed a whole family!?

Cheers.

I tend to have quite a bit of fruit for breakfast and a pint of milk.

Lunch will be my big meal - normally chicken/beef with mash or a pasta dish.

Dinner will normally be a sandwhich or something.

(I work 16:00 to 00:00 which is why I swap a normal person lunch and dinner around)

I snack on fruit throughout the day - normally 2x bananas, an apple, tangerine etc.

Drink plenty of water, orange juice, apple juice, cranberry juice etc, and even though I shouldn't, plenty of coke.

Personally breakfast and lunch should be your 2 biggest meals. Try to get atleast 4 meals in a day so you're eating more frequently which will also help hunger

You're always hungry so try upping calories, try munching on nuts throughout the day - Brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts.

When you have carbs with your meals try complex carbs - I.e have wholewheat pasta instead of normal.
Use brown bread instead of white etc.

Carb up on a morning, you'll notice energy increase and should help you stay fuller for longer

Completely agree with this, also try knocking the coke on the head.

Protein foods are what make you feel full, so perhaps cut back on a bit of the fruit and have more milk/cheese/yoghurts etc, may help you but everyone is different.

Personally I like feeling hungry & empty.

ETA - Your having 5/6 bits of fruit a day, this might cause problems for your teeth, cheese is a good way of neutralising acid in your mouth and this is were having cheese and biscuits after a meal came from.

2hrs 5days pw is a bit intense drop it to one hour 5 days pw. You may see more gains and be less hungry.

Interested why you say that - not disputing or anything but, having looked at the nutritional lable info, semi skinned contains more protein. Are there more minerals or something
in whole milk?

Good fats and more calories mainly.
I suggested boosting calorie intake and small change such as this will help.

I actually use whole milk in shakes, but I'm on a constant 'bulk' so this helps me get my macros

Edit: quick google suggests vitamins A and D are removed or something during semi skimmed/skimmed milk process

The protein difference is small enough as to not matter really, not if you're chugging a couple of protein shakes a day on top of the usual chicken, fish, egg whites etc.

Bah. You call that lot loads of food? Pu$$y. wink

Could be many things, but here's 3 factors that appear to be relevant to you:-

1) Protein fills you up more than anything else. Seek mostly protein sources, not fat or carb sources.

2) We crave protein and numerous recent studies/theories/reports suggest that really we just keep eating until we've had enough protein, so if you eat crap with little protein, what you end up doing is eating loads of crap until your body realises it's eaten enough protein. (many of your food sources are crap sources of protein, especially fruit.)

Here's one report pretty hot off the press: http://www.sciencealert.com.au/news/20130711-24992...

3) If you're going to the gym and exercising well, your body needs protein in huge quantities compared to what you're used to. It needs protein for growth and repair and your body is doing this like mad. It knows what it wants, even if you don't.

1, 2 & 3 are all clearly connected, so it's most likely to be this. Occam's Razor.

My appetite went nuts when I really hit the gym at Uni. On a student budget, that was NOT handy.
Just ate loads of tinned tuna, cheap chicken and both pasta and rice.
Gained three stone in 18 months.

Try a glass of water. You might be dehydrated rather than hungry.
