I currently have an e60 530i as my daily and love it, it has such good oomph and reliability and solidity yet still remains nimble through the corners and returns an average of 30 or more mpg.

The trouble is we need something bigger for when we go away as even with a roof box we run out of space with our 2 toddlers.

I'd like to sell the BMW privately and should get around £4.5k (I paid £6.5k just under a year ago).

So that's the remit - large, 4.5kish, big, 30mpg and reliable.

But what?

I'd like to stay with a good brand as I can't be bothered with keep repairing an unreliable car. I've never had any issues with the current car.

I'd trade a few mpg to add 4WD capability as that would be useful too.

So what does the PH brigade suggest?

Not sure you can get a practical family car with a better load carrying ability than a 5 series estate?

How old are the kids? The amount of crap reduces pretty quickly, in the meantime get a bigger roofbox or strap one of the Thule soft boxes to the boot.

4x4s aren't all that. You'll sacrifice 5+ mpg and a load of pace despite having to go diesel. And it won't handle half as well.

Bill is right, sounds like you have a cracking motor at the moment and if you can "mend and make do" as it were, that'd be your best option IMO - but seriously, you'd lose £2000 on it in a year? :S

Balls, get a Disco 4 and waft about in comfort and space whilst looking down on everyone. Great way to travel and you'll get close to 30mpg.

...forget that, just saw your budget. Sorry.

I have to wonder how my parents managed with three toddlers in an A40, come to that I wonder how I used to cope when I could get 5 people & kit in some of the cars I had years ago yet things now spill into back seats when it just me and a bigger car.

IMO some persepctive....what exactly are you taking with you and where are you going?
The number of people I know with perfectly decent 5 door hatchbacks with only one toddler who are upgrading to X5s and alike is astonishing, and all because they 'need' more room for the stuff they 'need'...
crazy.
2 adults, 2 toddlers and a 5 series saloon with a roofbox....you should be coping fine IMO...

FFS when my 2 were little we had an AX 1.4D as our family car. And an MG Metro as my wife's run about.

I'm not sure you need more space than that, until they are in Junior School (when a cavalier hatch was the family car)

Yeah, we were in the Yorkshire dales and the nearest McD's was 19 miles away, postman pat was permanently in the VHS, but could be seen every day through the window delivering to the village, and Ipads were something you cut out for a fancy dress party.

Leave the wife, move in with a 19 year old and buy a motorbike.

You'll never know unless you try...
