Main Dealers, car preparation ( or lack of )
Discussion
I bought my car with 140 miles on the clock from a main dealer last year, so I think it fair to describe it as having been new. I also signed up to a service plan and the car has been serviced in accordance with the service schedule.
I had new tyres fitted last week and the tyre guy said that I should see the condition of the tyres that I was replacing. I was alarmed to see that the inner edge of both rear tyres looked like a jumble of coat hangers, they had almost worn through! I have Autobhaned this car at max leptonnage, I had no idea that the edged we're so worn although I did inspect the tyres once a month ( it is really tricky to see the inside rear edges)
So I have had the tracking checked and it was miles out-I can only assume that the main dealers obsession with offering me a cup of coffee and 'managing' my service 'experience' is more important than making sure that my car works properly!?

How many dealers check tracking as part of a service schedule.
Your car probably goes up to 15k miles between services, you could have hit numerous bumps, potholes, kerbs in that time, so hardly the fault of the dealer.
How hard is it to bend down and look at the inside edge of your tyres once a week? I would say this is clearly down to your lack of care and attention.
Always easy to blame somebody else.

You need to take some responsibilty. You clearly didn't inspect the tyres properly because through your own admission, the inside edge was difficult to see. So if you cannot inspect the tyres properly, get them to someone who can.
As for the dealer being responsible for not checking your tracking, it can drift out easily within a few hundred miles, let alone thousands, if you keep going up and down kerbs, potholes, etc.
I'm no dealer fanboy by any stretch, but blaming them for your tracking being out or not checking it properly is a bit of a pisstake.

How many miles have you done?
When was the car serviced? Did they pick up on any wear on the tyres?
Have you driven into any kerbs?
Have you been doing any burnouts/donuts?
Too many variables to say the dealer is at fault for anything TBH. You're saying they didn't prep a 140 mile old car you bought a year ago? Or are you having a dig because they didn't pick up on tyre wear/misalignment?
At at the end of it, you're responsible for checking your own tyres, if you'd been pulled would you have said 'But officer, my dealer didn't tell me my tyres were getting low!'?
More info needed.

Have to agree, something you should have checked.
Sounds like it's been run at low pressures too.
Low pressure would affect inner and outer edges, Shirley.?Sounds like it's been run at low pressures too.
Anyway.. You should install a four post lift on your drive so you can check your car
before every drive. Think of the children!?

I have been driving for 25 years, covering about 10k per annum, I think that I have a grasp of how often tracking needs attention- when it is carried out properly, it rarely wanders off, I am fastidious about avoiding kerbs and the roads that I use do not appear to be littered with potholes. When was the car serviced? Did they pick up on any wear on the tyres?

The car was serviced at 12k miles with a clean bill of health, the front wheels were replaced under warranty due to corrosion 1,500 miles ago- The odo is now on 17k. When the two front wheels were replaced, they were not balanced properly so I have not been wowed by their skills. If I had more time, I could have complained but any visit to the dealer seems to involve 30 minutes of waiting, checking over the car, waiting to collect it etc etc, it all gets a bit tedious.
The wear was almost entirely within the first 50mm of the inner edge of the tyre, they are pretty wide at 255mm, I am afraid that my body doesn't bend into a position that allows me to get near to the inner corner of the tyre!
I would imagine that the uneven wear would have been apparent 1500 miles ago but they were obviously looking at the other two wheels......
I shall be sure to keep a closer eye on the inner edge, it really did catch me out!

Have you subsequently had the wheels balanced or have you been running for the last 1500 miles like that?Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
