Instrumental metal

Bit of a spin off from the "Heavy Music" thread really, but thought I'd post as a new topic rather than drag that from the depths.

Have recently really started to "get" the instrumental side of the whole progressive/djent genre, and just wondered if anyone else also enjoyed it? I have long standing issues with pointlessly shouty vocals infecting modern metal, so this stuff is a real breath of fresh air, even to a jaded old school metal fan such as myself!

Not suggesting it's the future of music, and could reasonably claim a lot of that sounds the same, but I find it works rather like the more spaced out end of the doom metal spectrum in its ability to set a mood. Also love the independent spirit behind a lot of it.

It's funny how you listen to music and often vocals distract you from things that you don't pick up on normally. The new tesseract album has one disc with vocals on it and another disc with just the music. I was honestly amazed at how much more I heard on the vocal free disc. Liteally loads of stuff you just don't hear when your brain is locking onto the lead melody line ( which is nearly always the vocal).

I quite like the diy aspect of all this new metal and because the days of analog recording are behind us I don't have to suffer god awful production quality. Some kid in india ( see skyharbor) can get his incredible talents exposed globally in a way now through the Internet and cheap digital recording that wasn't possible even a decade ago.

It used to cost me literally thousands in studio time and so on with a band back in the 90s wheras if I was doing it now I would likely produce better more complex music without the constraints of a ticking clock. Gid I wish I was in my 20's again!

I love Metallica but that was a terrible rendition of Orion, mainly because Hetfield's guitar seemed really quiet and Kirk's dreadful, pitchy playing and wobbly, piss-weak vibrato were centre stage.

I do love some instrumental metal though.

Stoner is the way to go for that sort of thing me thinks,

Ozeric tenticles are a good shout as well although a little less rock more pysch.

ETA - have to agree with Tuscaneer regarding lack of vocals revealing more about the music. I struggle to get into a lot of the newer bands people rave about, mostly because everyone seems to be doing the same vocal style, which really kills the interest for me. Finding bands that don't drown things with the usual growl / scream / clean vocals (or offer release with/without) has opened up some great new bands for me. I'm not a musician, so can't appreciate the technicality from that level, but I'd say my appreciation of what's going on has been increased through not having the distraction of vocals. I find myself picking up things I'd wouldn't have done before, which in turns makes me pick up new things in the other stuff I listen to.

Perhaps have a listen to Marty Freidmans solo album in 88 'dragons kiss', rather great dark brooding album, musically very interesting, one of the 'shred' musicians that really can claim a certain sound.

Its all up on youtube, its more guitar focussed but rather good.

Back in the mists of time I worked for this Dutch band Kong, a rather complicated band to work for as they insisted on playing on individual stages, each with their own PA stack and a quadrophonic mix. All good fun.
