Planning road trip to Austria In the Tuscan

Evening all. My wife and I have just decided to take the TVR to Austria in the early spring. I have the usual reservations about doing it.But I'm sure all will be OK. We are looking for some advice to reassure me(us). Have you done it? If so we would love to hear from you regarding places you went to and hotels along the way. Also is there any literature out there regarding rules of taking the car abroad?

Hi Dave, hope you are both well?

Just do it mate, we did a 2k mile road trip to Frejus in the South Of France this year & the car didnt miss a beat. A trip we will remember for years to come.

Hi Nick.Nice to hear from you first,and thanks for the encouragement. It will be the first big drive we have done,apart from back home this year.Our"new"Tuscan drove like a dream. So now we feel a bit more confident,we most likely will bite the bullet and do it. As the land rover fraternity quote "One life live it" And I'm not getting any younger;)
The Essex breakaway group,ie Pauline and Ray/Simon and Deb,Plus a few more want to visit your monthly meet to see you all again. When is it please? Tomorrow would be nice.hehe

I did 2500 miles in July in the Chim, going through Germany staying in Frankfurt one night down to the Alps in and out of Austria, stayed in Berchtesgaden (Bavaria) 2 nights, and Scharnitz (Austria) for 3 nights, then went to the Nurburgring on the return leg and done a couple of laps before heading home via Brussels.

Not one glitch from the Chim all week drove well behaved very well on the mountain passes and had the adrenaline flowing nicely round the Nurburgring. Although had a slight altercation with a tree at a restaurant in Austria, requiring slight fibre glass repair when I got home.

I would do it again - I took a few recommended spares and a few tools none of which saw the light of day.

As they have all said just do you will love it, not been to Austria so can,t help you on that, longest trip we have done was to south of France and drove all the twisty roads 2800 miles in a week and drove quite quickly in my Cerb only had a minor glitch the brake light switch melted so we fixed it with bits of wire the others on the trip said it was something to do with the way I drive don,t as I don,t know what they mean, loved it though and still remember it, been on various trips to France le Mans 12 times, Honfluer 3 times, Reims 3 times and Arras quite few times and only had a few minor issues sump plug departed the Griff on a dual carriage way and 2 batteries died on me one in the Griff and one in the Cerb

There are sites, mainly bikers sites that you can google that give you all the best roads to drive and what hotels to stay in, I normally go on the tunnel as its quicker, but we are off to Arras for the xmas market next Friday and going by ferry as the other TVR drivers and wives want to go on the ferry

As above...get on and book the ferry. I guess in (early) spring, hotels etc, should not be a problem.

I've had my Tuscan 4 years on Tuesday, done 30K miles.
Every summer I've done a European jaunt. Get them serviced by one of the 'good' garages and you'll be fine.

For extra peace of mind, take a mobile and get good travel/recovery insurance.

Sorry, can't help. Not taken the TVR to Austria only to France, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and Spain. Not all on the same trip.

I prefer the ferry. They will almost certainly put you on a lower deck due to the ground clearance - if not ask as you start driving onto the ferry.

The RAC used to give info about driving abroad. Fluorescent jackets, spare headlamps and the like.

In Austria you need a vignette to drive on the motorway. They do one for a week or two which is around 15 euro from memory. I'm told there are steep fines for driving without one. You can get them over the counter from the first services in Austria or the last in Germany.

As for rules of the road, worth remembering that they drive on the right.

Just watched all 13.50 minutes.... Beautiful... 25mpg that way 15 uphill going home

I hope you have a big house as i think that video will inspire quite a few.

What month was that filmed Jimmy?

Went out today for a 2hr drive of no designated point... Not quite the same scenery that you have

We drove from Exeter to wilhelmsburg in the summer to stay with friends and drive the alps. 5 days down, a week there and 2 days back. Was an amazing trip, catching up with friends each night on the way down. The Germans and the Austrians are the friendliest people, they love tvr's and there lager is great. Managed to get rides in an xk120 a Tuscan racer a sag and a cerb while there. The Tuscan did the 3000 miles without any issues even in the 37'c heat and we will be going back soon. If your interested I can post some photos?

That was filmed in April this year. And now that I know how to sort out my leaking steering which I have removed 3 months ago from the car I am absolutely sure to do that again next spring

...oh and I do not give a tinkers fart for mpg figures. To me it is just transforming fuel into smiles.

Wrong guess. I am a born German. And it is not all downhill but mostly.
Have fun riding with me through the Alps. Some say it is boring and some (Groucho Marx) say "God Alps those that Alp themselves". I just load up raw material as I haven't the time to edit the movies.
I make them mainly for myself to watch during winter when I cannot drive because of the feckin snow over here. Doesen't really make the itch smaller though...
Oddly Dave who started this thread has not answered my mail. Just sayin

this was taken in Namlostal which means Namlos Valley or No Name Valley to be exact. I have a nice roundtrip there which takes me about an afternoon to cover.

What you see in the vid is the part on the upper side of the map from past Berwang to Stanzach. You enter this road only about 15 miles from Füssen into Austria!
