The old man has been something of a petrol head for all of his life, although in his later years it's been tamed.

He has currently a 4.0V8 S -type. It's done a few miles, and he's decided that this week it's feeling it's age.

So he has agreed to buy without seeing it a 4.2 S-type with fewer miles. He's not sure where the garage is (but knows its 127 miles from him), has not seen the car, and the finance company have paid out for the car already.

Now I think there's not much that he's done right here. He's lost out in the past as he's bought cars chosen because of a sunroof, unseen, to find that there is not a sunroof...

Could this be early dementia? Anyone elses parents equally beyond help?

1. Probably not. The real thing, in my experience frown tends to be 'in the head' rather than physical like this.

2. All parents are headed for the 'funny farm', some of us will get there sooner than others. Ever wondered why your parents had grey hair?

3. Spending the kids' inheritance reducing your potential IHT bill is quite legal!
