I'm in the marketi for a new sound set up in the living room. We've got a soundbar at the moment but fancy having something more involved.

Budget up to about £500

Connectivity - we've got a TV, Apple TV, XBOX and Sky HD box. There's a wireless network and it'd be close enough to get to a router if needs be

I've been looking on Amazon now for about an hour and keep tripping up over the HDMI, and dont understand whether an optical switch would be better. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should be looking at?

I've got one of these and I'm very pleased. It's got an ethernet port so it connects directly to the router for playback of music from the NAS drive, or internet radio.

I use the Denon remote app, which makes controlling it easier than via the scrolling screen on the amp itself.

It's my first experience of TV + amp and I'm v.pleased. I have used an old pair of MS10s that I had, the Richer Sounds offer was £100 off a speaker, so I got a free MS centre, and I've bought a 2nd hand sub. So it's a 3.1 system. with the active sub working to extend the MS10s, and as a separate LFE.

Can't imagine anything but a very cheap machine not having 4 HDMI at a minimum.

Denon, Onkyo and Yamaha are the brands to be looking at for your budget.

Check out Richer Sounds etc for recently discontinued/replaced models, as you can often pick up a higher quality model (allbeit with less features) from a series above for the price of the new lower series model.
