Hi Guys
I am a bit down on my luck at the moment and have called into Warwickshire to visit my family for a few days.

I could do with a break alone so thinking of driving up to the Scottish Highlands for a couple of days.

I have driven the daily hack to Warwick but am thinking it maybe risky putting 1000+ miles on it in a few days!

Any ideas??

I could rent something like a Land Rover but the am sure they would have mileage limitation on the policy??

I do not want to buy a vehicle just for 3 days use.

Any ideas or anyone know where I could rent either a sports car or 4 x 4 at a reasonable cost would be much appreciated!

Cheers

You won't need a 4x4 if you're coming up in the next week. Hire something smaller if I were you.... or fly to Inverness and rent there.

What's the daily hack? Is it really that unreliable? If you have breakdown cover I say just go for it

A MK3 Golf GTi that I have owned for many years and it is ultra reliable.

I could take this but at the same time it would be nice doing it in a nice car to make it more fun!

Do it though, nothing beats the Highlands for a bit of alone time, and the best driving on this island!

Fantastic place to go to.

I've never found it makes any difference what you're driving up there, just being there is the "thing" for me.

I like the Isle of Skye.

Yep, do this. I hired a Caterham from him and it was superb, same company as highland caterham hire, check out that website too.

I flew up, cost the same to get the train to London as it did to fly to Inverness!

Birmingham to Inverness is only 1.5 hours with Flybe! Just do it!

Have you been before?

If you haven't then I wouldn't be concerned about getting a sports car. You'll be spending most of the time gawping at the scenery, not nailing apexes.

Just get something comfy, efficient and torquey. The next time you go up after that......then you can choose the roads you want to nail and maybe get something more focused for the job.

Watch out for plod. Especially on the A9.

I was caught by a hand held laser device being used from inside an unmarked police car 1500 feet ahead of me in a lay by on the other side of the road.

They could only have been more inconspicuous if they were under camouflage netting.

No sense of humour and a trip to the Justices of the Peace Court in Inverness awaits. Takes the fun out of your weekend for sure.

No, not been before, the furthest North I have visited is Edinburgh.

I just had a quick look at your very general hire car companies and found a good deal.

I selected their most premium car (it states such as Merc C class) with a 1200 miles allowance and that was under £300 Mon-Thur.

I may drive to a couple hire places in the morn and see If I can strike a deal!

Op if you don't trust your own car and want to hire one, fly to Inverness as suggested and hire one there, good luck, a truly stunning part of the world that is wasted on the sweatys , ( joking of cause ). : laugh:

Ah a local - I'm only over in Kenilworth smile If you just want to hire something generic to get you there in good shape, Hertz in Coventry (easy to get to from Warwick) are absurdly well priced for some reason and offer unlimited mileage. I've just booked a Focus (or equivalent) for 48 hours from Thursday afternoon to do a 600 mile round trip and the total charge is only £58. I've hired from Hertz before to get me up to Glasgow to visit friends and paid similar money to get a Mondeo for the trip.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do - certainly a great drive up there smile And I hope whatever your bad circumstances are, they improve for the better soon.

In terms of where to go up there - well, you can't really go too far wrong. Loch Lomond is beautiful, and then heading up past there and then take the A82 towards Fort William is some of the most spectacular scenery. I guess the only concern is the conditions - not sure what the forecast is. But I've driven up there numerous times now and always come away having had a totally jaw dropping experience. I've never had a strong desire to move from around here because of family and friends, but if I did, I reckon it'd be up there!

Any time I've hired to go up north, I've gone to Enterprise and taken an Insignia, as they only have this one in Diesel( not exactly a luxury model, but great for that trip ,good MPG with good ratios for the motorway ,and plenty of pull in the lower gears for quick overtaking). I took one to Ardumurchan light one ,with ease. Unlimited miles ,only thing I don't like is their insurance excess or the fee to drop it
BUT- get a quote on line as it's ALWAYS cheaper than on site
