Lubricating your shaft
Discussion
Its just normal cv joint grease. It is black, and is probably stincking due to being past its best. Not a lot you can do the the cv`s other than clean them and re pack with new grease. The grease has probably been in there since day 1, so prob not a bad idea to clean it all out, inspect the cv`s and re pack. To be honest if you havent got any strange cloncking sounds from the rear end they are probably ok.
Peter,
I found this site really helpful when I did the CV joints on my old Chim. It is a pig of a job. It's for VW's but we appear to share the same CV joint.

Hardest bit was removing the circlip holding on the CV assembly - you really need a decent set of circlip pliers - watch out - mine pinged off across the garage and it took half an hour to find.
