After browsing around for the past week I finally decided to make a thread. Looking for suggestions for a new car, budget is 3K as I have to leave room for insurance as i'm only 20 but could go a bit higher is its worth it. My last car was a 1.6 Renault Megane Coupe so new car has to be quicker than that. Problem is I was only a named driver so still have no year NCB. Now I know young drivers and quick cars don't mix well but i'm looking something quick or a fair bit quicker than the Renault. I know you probably get a lot of threads like this but any help is appreciated!

Thanks smile

The hardtop for an MX5 is just an accessory item that can be bought second hand for about £300 or quite a lot of cars already have them

At your age with 0 NCB your going to struggle to insure anything 'quick'.

At 31 with 0 NCB I was paying £1200 TPFT on a Bmw 323 coupe.
An mx5 1.8 was £450 p/year and pretty bloody quick! I wish you luck. Or a lottery win. smile

MK3 mr2, not sure about insurance unless youre on a parents policy though.

Pretty swift, 60 in 7secs, so not as quick as some hatches that will be offered up as options (182 clios etc), but then the Toyota is about the handling and balance rather than bhp.

No space inside, no boot really, so if you want to buy a Christmas tree with it, the MR2 isn't the best choice...

I love mine, great fun feels very much like a proper sports car with the mid engine feel, yet to put properly good rubber on it yet as the cheapo set that was on them was like new, and sadly Im doing lots of boring motorway miles at the moment, but even with crap tyres its spectacular fun. But with Yokohama ADO8s on it driving

Quite a few with hard tops as well, which makes the car looks far more focussed IMHO rather than just with the soft top.

As a GT it seems to spit opinion, my brother hates the car as does my dad for ride comfort I like it, sure it isn't the best motorway companion but that's not really its home turf.

That is hideously expensive. At 20 I had my RX-7 and RX-8 insured for £1500 on a multi-car policy.

Fiat Panda 100hp

Great fun while you build up some no claims and shouldn't be horrible on insurance.

Alternatively, Mini Cooper S (standard Cooper might be cheaper on insurance though)

It sounds like you can't get anything quicker than your 1.6 Megane because you can't insure it. Do you live in a dodgy area? Is that £2.5k for a 1.6 MX5, or a 1.8?

Ignis Sport, Swift Sport but may be high mileage or a bit rough at that price, or a Panda 100hp as said.

All cheap cars, which will give you plenty of grins, and isn't the usual MX5 suggestion.

@Point I get what you are saying about the Panda just to build up NCB and at 1K for insurance its very cheap. But it just seems like a downgrade on the Renault, looks wise anyway. Mini Cooper S is 3.5K and even the normal Mini Cooper is 2K.

@RenOHH I can insure it for around £1300 but gave it to my mum a year ago as at the time I couldn't afford to insure it again. Not really a dodgy area, maybe because i'm from N.Ireland :/

The MR2 was nearly 5k to insure lol...

I don't get it though, a 1.5 Swift is 2.2K to insure yet I can insure a Jetta for 1.4K which I think is very good!
