Sad day for this Forum when a thread has to be closed as the topic is beyond the mental abilities of members to enable them to discuss a problem that affects some.

If you want to cure a cancer the best thing to do is to study and learn its ways before working out how to stop it growing and then to eradicate it. Want to cure a mainly mental illness and have someone who suffers(ed) from it involved? Nar sod doing anything useful, let's just point fingers, call names and get the thread closed.

I honestly though that there was hope for this place but sadly even here the rule of the mob seems to hold sway.

I do hope that all those who were so quick to post their revulsion sit back at home tonight and think on if their efforts are likely to have:-

a) Improved their understanding and therefore ability to protect their child and those they care for , or

b) Made them feel a big man whilst doing precisely nothing to protect children, in fact quite foresee ably further endangering them as a result of driving any discussion underground.

He didn't help himself. His profile notes etc were probably meant to be humorous, but came across as mocking, even trolling.

Must say I didn't get that far. Did see someone mention about starting a thread up like this in the Lost Prophets thread.

No issue with the closure BTW, more I felt a need to comment that 6 or 7 years ago that thread would most likely have become very interesting from an academic POV. Today? Lasts less than 10 minutes frown

PS thanks for taking the time to reply smile

No worries. FWIW I agree, although Brass Eye's paedo special got a similar response back in 2001 so 6 or 7 years might be optimistic. smile

to keep it simple:-

1. Bloke opens thread saying "I was/am someone who was convicted of looking at pornographic images of underage children. I have done my time and now no longer have/feel the need to follow those urges thanks to the offenders programme. If you'd like to ask any questions please feel free."

2. 10 minutes of 99% kuckle draggers asking if he would mind drinking all the bleach in his house, etc. A couple of sensible questions but lost in the hast of others to light their tourches and get the pitchforks out.

3. Thread understandably closed before anything of interest learnt that could help anyone.

4. I post a thread in here to maon about the idiots taking over the Asylum. Bill observes that even when it were all grass it's likely that the thread would have failed and that the OP of the thread didn't help it get off to the best start by some of the information in their profile.

If, and it's a big IF, the moderator tools can marry up the two profiles via ip addresses etc, it may be possible for a Moderator/Paul to deduce whether the posting style of the poster's usual PH profile is likely to lead to a genuine thread.

Could be quite interesting, but 95% likely to not last beyond this evening!

I am sure that certain people at PH towers have the ability to do that but as you say even if it hit all the right notes (OP willing to try again, PH willing to see how it rolls with the trolls, etc) it would end swiftly as someone got all ott or worse that the media outside PH towers picked it up and tried to make a story out of it...

Badly worded by me, but my "IF" is an assumption that the poster would not be posting behind his usual IP address on this occasion.

I didn't contribute to the thread but I reported it.

I may be wrong but I convinced myself that the poster didn't have noble intent.

Either way, I saw a real potential for a passing journo to latch on to the thread.

Overall, I think it's good that it's gone.

Regarding the unsavoury replies; they were exactly as I would have anticipated.

yes

On balance I think that there are too many immature people on this forum to allow a thread like that to work properly.

I agree about questioning the OP but given that there was mention of such a thread last week I must say that I was willing to give them a whirl should they turn out to be genuine.

Most certianly see how a passing journo could twist it about and 'do their job'. Sorry don't hold them in high regard as a rule having seen too many words printed that are not utter lies and falsehoods that could be dragged into court but are utter misrepresentations of the truth and purely done to sell a rag or two but leave others with ruined lives.

glad i missed it i think, as much as i can be critical about PH & some of the moderation on the site i can't help thinking that although "it has no place here" might be a little reactionary regarding the subject matter i can't see how PH as a whole could possibly benefit from people posting such "confessionals".

In the same way that thre are a lot of people in NP&E who badly need to read a little of the Koran or learn a little more about people who are not the same as them other than what they read in the Daily WASP.

but, & it's a big but....

as noble as the intention of education of the masses is i suspect that on an open forum such as pistonheads you're simply not going to get a huge amount of open & honest discussion before the thread descends into puerile insults (as this thread appears to have done).

you then have the moral obligations of PH/Haymarket to consider;

is a (mostly) family friendly car enthusiasts forum the right place to be debating such a serious matter?

will such a serious matter result in thread content that the publishers would want to quickly distance themselves from?

to put it bluntly, a thread such as this is going to go tits fairly quickly & i can't see anyone benefiting much from the direction it may go in.

smile At the risk of getting told off for discussing such things in this forum smile

The OP seemed open enough at first. It never got the chance to see if it would or not but this place has had some really good threads on topics from drugs, relationships, and many topics that. Puerile insults though are perhaps subjective. “Get all the tablets in your house and wash them down with bleach” is perhaps a puerile insult. “Do you get your opinions from the Daily WASP?” is an insult on the face of it but is also enquiring into the mindset the recipient is holding and how it comes across to the reader. It is designed to convey emotion (not something that is easy when you only have the written word to use) and opinion.

Is a mostly family friendly car forum the palace to discuss tattoos? Anal sex? Relationship break downs? Mental breakdowns, serious physical injuries, etc, etc. When you draw a line you have to be careful where you put it.

Honestly, and without trying to sound all emotive or moan at the Powers that Be, it seems that the only topic that is off limits on this forum is one that tries to help people understand what makes those who are interested in people under 16 in a sexual way tick. Almost anything else goes.

Again I fully understand the concern for PH on this and as I am a rational and fairly normal person can see why it isn’t likely to happen. It is just that I find it sad that there are so many good things about this place, and so many have learnt so much over the years from restoring their faith in humanity to how to open the boot of a Chim when the battery is flat, that such a topic can’t be discussed.

More so when the rational part of me has always said that the best way to win any battle is to know everything you can about your side, and that which you oppose.

Just to clarify rude-boy when I said puerile insults I meant the original thread & not this one in WF thumbup

Yes it a shame, but had the thread remained polite & progressive I still think it wouldn't be wise to keep it open. A subject such as that is always going to attract the nutters

If I had seen the thread I probably would have reported too. I don't think I want to learn about some subjects and intend to leave that to the professionals.

I hoped it would run for at least a couple of hours with some decent information coming out, but certainly just now it's a doomed endeavour with the way some members act. I do think tendencies towards little children demonstrate clear mental illness/issues and being the father of a not-yet three year old girl, I'd like to know more about how these people function. Anything that can help me protect her...
