In a bit of a dilemma at the moment. I have had my CAAD 10 for just over a year and over that time I have replaced most of the finishing kit. I'm now in a position to get my hands on a 2014 CAAD10 stealth frameset at a knock down price to which I would add Ultegra shifters, brakes, derailleurs to the SL-K chain set I acquired earlier this month. I'd then have an original Liquigas CAAD10 to sell to offset the cost of the new frame and Ultegra kit. I reckon I should see somewhere between £500-700 which would leave me with very well specced CAAD10.

However I foolishly looked on the Canyon site and saw the SLX 7.0. Unless I am missing something this has to be the best value bike on the market by some margin which has got me thinking if my time and money would be better spent abandoning the CAAD10 project and buying a new Canyon. After doing the maths the difference between blinging the CAAD and buying the Canyon is not as great as I thought it might be (circa £400).

This is what the CAAD would look like when done

The thoughts of the PH cycle massive would be appreciated.

Do you mean the CF SL 7.0 which is £1399 or the SLX 7.0 which is £2799

If it's the SL 7 I would get the CAAD, its not much of an upgrade. If it's the SLX vs CAAD then I would take the SLX

It's the more expensive SLX i am using for comparison. However it looks like the 7.0 is in high demand with Canyon quoting late March for delivery. Not sure I can wait that long.

Would you really ride a good bike one the roads in this country before March? Your poor rims and gruppo...

This would be my only road bike so if I wanted to ride i would have to ride it. Are they really that fragile? I'm guessing the bottom bracket and wheel bearings are susceptible to failure but regular maintenance would hopefully stop that from happening.

of course it would, components not made of cheese.
will it take a lot of maintenance to keep in A1 condition? yes. Is that impossible riding through the winter? no .

I've got Ultegra on my winter bike. Do about 200km a week this time of year. Once a week the bike gets cleaned, with the drivetrain and the braking surfaces getting a bit more attention. Doubt it's 20mins in total. Bike looks like new at the beginning of each week.

FWIW, there's a guy on my commute with DI2, and his rear cassette looks like it's covered with a mix of sludge and swarf.

I've discovered that if "everyone does it" in cycling there's normally a reason.

My winter bike is needing a good clean every 100 miles, sometimes less. Crap over every inch, on every cranny. Must be putting orders of magnitude more wear on the drivetrain - and I'm happy I'm not grinding expensive rims away (yay for discs).

If you can afford to put several summers of wear on it every winter (and the chance of binning it on crappy roads)- go for it.

Id rather put the winter wear on a cheap apex group set and an ally frame instead of abusing red / force and carbon....
Most of my cycling club seems to have hopped onto vintage 80s and 90s steel framed classics... Some with frame shifters and 28c tyres (and they are still faster than I am!)

Am I right in thinking the CAAD 10 Stealth is just a matte black finished CAAD 10 frame? Or is there more to it?

I'm a Cannondale fanboy, I think they're great and would happily have another when I come to replace my SuperSix. However that Canyon is beautiful. For the sake of £400 (if it's not a big deal to you) I think i'd happily be having a new bike.

March will be hear before you know it. Would you have to sell the CAAD 10 now to fund it? Not sure how it works with Canyon, do you have to pay in full at the time of ordering?

I wouldn't have to sell the Cannondale right away to fund it but it would have to go at some point otherwise I'd need to find somewhere else to sleep as well. You make a good point about the payment terms for Canyon. Again not sure if I'd be comfortable about giving them over £2.5k and then having to wait nearly 4 months for the bike. Scope creep is already coming in as the SLX 8.0 with full Dura-Ace is in stock. I really don't like the looks of Ksyrium Elites though.

It's anodised black alu, therefore no paint = lighter. My 52cm frameset is 1090 grams bare

Fantastic bike with all round abilities, have completed 2 audax on it this year biggrin

What are your reasons for wanting to swap one frameset out for an identical (albeit stealth) frameset? I personally can't really see the value in doing this unless it does cost you next to nothing once you've sold your Liquigas frame.

I'd contemplate selling the bike as a whole as it is now, and looking for a cheap deal on last years models, possibly a Supersix if you like the CAAD 10 geo.

Both the links below are pretty good value IMO.

The reason for wanting to swap the same frame is for pure vanity reasons. I think the all black frame looks better than the Liquigas colours. I looked at getting a respray but to get it done properly is not cost effective. Of the two bikes you linked the Supersix Ultegra is not a major step up from my CAAD in its current form but the Evo is a good shout. Thanks.

I may be out of date with this info, I'm sure itsnotarace will know more, but IAUI the cheaper CAAD10s with 105 or whatever came with heavier forks with an alu steerer. The Stealth frameset will have full carbon forks which may make it an upgrade from your current one.

I wouldn't bother swapping a bike just for the colour, get a new handbag instead?

I wouldn't want to wait four months for a bike , especially when there is no physical presence to view the bike before hand. There was a thread a few months back about someone who got fed up and cancelled their Canyon order because the due date kept getting pushed back. You can see how they keep costs down...

TBH I would just spend it on a decent holiday and keep what you have.

Running one bike all year round is fine if you don't go out much and use mudguards. I only got a winter bike as I am riding most days down stty mud infested roads. Cleaning it quickly every weekend quickly brings it back to perfect condition. I wouldn't want to skimp on cleaning though, you can hear the riders that do...crrreeeeaaakkk ...ccrreeeaaakk

So for an extra £400 you get a DA 9000 spec one and the bike before xmas!! biggrin Winner! buy buy buy!

If you really don't like the wheels I dare say you'd get almost retail for them on ebay.

This was definitely the case with the CAAD9s. Only the Ultegra and DA models got the full carbon fork, but since the 10 was released they have all had full carbon forks - it's only the CAAD8 that gets the alu steerer now

Oh btw I did try adding you on Flickr but you're not searchable, possibly profile hidden?

Back on topic, Westbrook are taking orders for next years CAAD frameset, I'm not aware of anywhere else in the UK thats getting these in frame only.

But putting £500-700 into a new frame is?

Yes as the cost can be offset with the sale of the old one. The cost of doing the respray was coming very close to the cost of a new frame. Most people wont go near the carbon as the paint has to be removed by hand.
