Over budget at £39, but Besserat de Bellefon Blanc de Blancs NV available from Oddbins is delicious, IMO.

Eta: Bollinger, Tattinger or Pol Roger NV are all good choices; if you hunt around you should be able to find them in budget.

Veuve Clicquot yellow label.

Laurent Perrier Rose.

Don't knock it but Lidl's £10 a pop Comte de Brismand gets good reviews. As does Aldi's Monsigny...

VC is on offer at Asda for £30 at the moment.

At this time of year you usually get VC in some nice gift box type thing as well.

Moet vintage (not brut) is usually very nice too at that price range.

Another vote for Veuve, definitely our favourite st this level. Louis Roederer NV is also good (imo SIGNIFICANTLY nicer than Cristal!).

For that budget Laurent Perrier NV is very good. A bit less you could get some very decent English stuff. Limneys blanc de blanc is very tasty. marks and Spencer stock a decent vintage Ridgeview blanc De blanc called marksman, I'd probably rate the limneys a bit better though.

If you can find it and want some French, Gallimard Pere et fils NV is very tasty, they have some great vintages too but I doubt you'll find any for your price in this country. I've seen the NV for under £25 though and it's delicious.

I love VC, but am a massive massive fan of LP rose. Both great recommendations IMHO.

Couldn't agree more! Apart from actually drinking the stuff, I found that Cristal has a really unpleasant smell too - or is that just me?

Veuve Yellow Label has been green and tart for several years now. Avoid. It's our house champagne at work and most of us hate it.

Bollinger is very, very good at the moment.

Better to look for high quality, smaller houses though, like Billecart Salmon, Larmandier-Bernier or Jacquesson (the NV might just be available at a sensible price if you look around).

Did a tour of champagne region with the Astons a couple of years ago and tasted back to back most people were surprised at the difference between Taittinger and Bollinger with the majority preferring the Tait' Throughout the range it had a more rounded taste. The other favourite was Louis Roederer. Waitrose have Taittinger NV with 25% at £27.74 a bottle which is a pretty good deal.
