Sorry in advance.

I will be needing a cheap, reliable runner next year. It needs to be frugal, safe and capable of trips from London to Hull every so often.

Would prefer petrol as I don't think a diesel would be economically viable as most of the running will be 9 miles each way to tring and a trip from London to Aylesbury every other week (40 miles each way).

Only needs one mod con, which is air con. Other than that it can be anything it wants.

Suggestions please. Budget will be around £500. I realise this isn't going to get me anything good.

I had a Volvo S40 for a couple of years and there are a few on AutoTrader under budget.

It was a good car and didn't cost me much to run. Good for long journeys too.

Working A/C on a sub £500 snotter? Which parts of the vehicle would you be happy to sacrifice NOT working in exchange?

You can't go much wrong with a Toyota Avensis.

Don't be daft, they're the last thing to ever die on old BMWs. Least used components.
