Hi Peeps…Took delivery of some front suspension bushes this morning..ARB..Leading link and drop link bushes..

But it was noticed over the weekend that there is considerable movement in the steering UJ's and a weird squeaking noise when rocking the steering wheel L to R..It sounded like it was coming from the front end near the rack?…Anyhow i was thinking while this is being done that it might be a good time to do the upgrade on the bulkhead steering bush…Question is did anyone find a good replacement and can you point me in the right direction, I believe mine has the SD1 column?…Cheers…Ziga
I found a link but wondered if i could have some more details please.

As mentioned previously ...
Like for like replacement .... the original lasted 20 plus years!
Ford partnumbers F7042536, and F6121994, F1650936, F1568136
They come as a set, but have seperate partnumbers. Total cost £3.31p (last year 2012)
its a very basic affair, but easy to fit.
Remove the carpet in the drivers footweel, see 4 bolts/nuts. Spanner inside and under wheel arch. remove front wheel, steering shaft has a couple of bolts with lock tabs - remove which lets the shaft swing free. Old bearing will slip over now. Put in new bearing etc, do up the steering bolts WITH LOCK TABS!!! - you dont want those coming loose!
About an hour.
Mark, the noise you elude to could be part of the same issue but I would change both the upper and lower steering U/J's while you are doing the bulkhead bearing My money is on that this is the issue fella and not all the other bushes....

Chris
Got mine off a mate who bought ut for his "Cobra" but didn't use it - bought a Griff instead but that's another story.
He thought they were Sierra. Looked strangely like Mr Wedg1e's but mine fitted the original bolt holes although the actual hole for the bearing was larger and I sealed it with Silicon the same - except white so had to run some underseal over that.
Eased the shake but didn't stop it and the steering seems lighter.
And the wipers don't work ....

Cheers chaps…Chris is this the one?..I don't think i have a triangular steering column although i need to check that..Or do i just need one of the bushes and not the whole kit?…Cheers…Ziga

Mark, try this: http://superflex.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=SF326-2...
I fitted this and it works great.

I think you have the SD1 column with the master light switch on the left had side of the cowl? If so that's the same as mine, and you don't have the triangular column shaft. I used an SLFL3/4 flanged bearing and a 9/16x3/4x1 oilite bush to do the job (oilite bush as a spacer to match the diameters);almost a straight bolt on fit with a bit of silicon gunge to keep the water out and penny washers to spread the load on the GRP. Bearingboys numbers #8154 and #42678.

Hi Martin..Yes i have the main light switch on the left side of the cowl..Just had a look on "Bearing boys" website and another good alternative…Cheers…ZigaHi Adam…The bulkhead bush looks a good job!…Although for now i think i might go the Superflex route and then bite the bullet next year when hopefully the car goes away for the chassis refurb..I just wish i had the space and tools to do it myself…Cheers…Ziga
