West Midlands police are advising buyers of second-hand cars to take photographs of sellers.

The police force is hoping to secure a conviction after a woman managed to take a photograph of someone selling her an allegedly stolen £7000 car.

Officers reckon the increased popularity of digital cameras and camera phones means buyers could more easily take photographs and help to bring cases to court.

What Car?'s editor, David Motton, said: 'If sellers are above board then they surely won't mind having their photograph taken. A dodgy trader could get aggravated if you stick a camera in his face, however, so be careful.

I don`t really know why, but i would not be happy with someone taking my picture if I sold them a car. It just makes me feel uneasy. I would, however, be happy to show photo ID proving that I am the person named on the V5.

If the problem of stolen vehicles, why dont we adopt the Dutch(?) syestem where buyer and seller have to present themselves at the Post Office(?) to effect the transfer.

I don't think this goes far enough. I think we should be made to take their fingerprints as well, and possibly a DNA sample.

And then we should restrain them, and lock them in the garage for at least a month. If the car turns out to be dodgy, we can then 'sentence' them as we see fit. After all, we know that ALL motorists are guilty of something, even if proven innocent.

Honestly, why can't we see that we must take on the role of policeman, and do all we can to do their work for them?

On the contrary, Blythy always hands over a soft-focused signed photo of himself to every punter.... whether they want it or not!
